Women’s Tennis Closes ITA Central Regional with Garcia Ruiz NCAA Berth

NORMAN -- The Oklahoma women's tennis team wrapped up the ITA Central Regional Championship on Monday at the Headington Family Tennis Center, highlighted by senior Julia Garcia Ruiz earning regional singles co-champion honors, and the duo of junior Chloé Nöel and sophomore Gloriana Nahum finishing as doubles runners-up.

In the opening round of main-draw action, seven of eight Sooners secured singles victories and three of four doubles teams advanced to the round of 32. In singles play, sophomore Mia Buchnik fell short to Memphis's Sofiia Mykhailets, 5-7, 5-7. All three winning doubles pairs advanced again, moving on to the round of 16.

In the singles round of 16, Salakthip Ounmuang, Roisin Gilheany and Gloriana Nahum dropped their matches. Three Sooners -- Garcia Ruiz, Nöel and Quadre – reached the quarterfinals, with Garcia Ruiz and Quadre earning spots in the semifinals.

Garcia Ruiz put together an impressive run through the draw, earning straight-set wins over Catherine Chrobak (UMKC), Pia Kranholdt (Iowa) and Maria Taranova (Nebraska), before rallying past Arkansas's Katarina Pavlechova, 2-6, 6-4, 6-1, to reach the semifinals.

In the semifinals, Garcia Ruiz claimed a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 win over Kyoka Kubo of Kansas, while Quadre fell to Arkansas's Carolina Gomez Alonso, 0-6, 1-6. Garcia Ruiz and Gomez Alonso elected not to play the championship match as both athletes automatically qualified to the NCAA Championships in Orlando by reaching the final round.

Doubles play saw continued success for the Sooners, with all three remaining OU pairs making their way to the quarterfinals. Oungmang and Buchnik fell to Arkansas' Carolina Gomez Alonso and Anet Koskel, while the duos of Garcia Ruiz/Quadre and Nöel /Nahum picked up day three ranked wins to move on to the semifinals. Garcia Ruiz and Quadre took down No. 31 Geiogia Roselli and Xin Tong Wang of Wichita State and Nöel and Nahum notched a victory over No. 60 Conley Raidt and Emma Rizzetto of Nebraska.

In the semis, Nöel and Nahum battled back to defeat Stanislava Shulzhenko and Maria de la Paz Alberto of Iowa State 4-6, 6-2, [12-10], to clinch a spot in the title match. Garcia Ruiz and Quadre came up just short against the Arkansas pair, 6-3, 4-6, [9-11].

Nöel and Nahum finished as doubles runners-up after a 4-6, 3-6 loss to Gomez Alonso and Kosel in the championship match.

The final NCAA qualifying events, the ITA Sectional Championship and the Conference Masters Championships, are scheduled for November 6-9.
