No. 7 Oklahoma Downs No. 2 Texas A&M, 4-1, for Fifth Top-10 Win

April 09, 2026 | Women's Tennis

NORMAN – The No. 7 Oklahoma women's tennis team continued its historic run Thursday evening, defeating No. 2 Texas A&M, 4-1, at the Headington Family Tennis Center. The victory marked the Sooners' 12th consecutive win and their fifth top-10 victory of the season.

With the win, Oklahoma improves to 22-4 overall and 12-2 in SEC play, while also securing its seventh top-25 victory of the year. The Sooners have now defeated both the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the nation in the same season for the first time in program history, following their win over top-ranked Georgia on March 29.

Oklahoma once again set the tone in doubles, securing the opening point. Julia Garcia Ruiz and Salakthip Ounmuang delivered a dominant 6-1 win over Violeta Martinez and Anna Perelman at the No. 3 position, improving to 18-2 together this spring and extending their winning streak to 10 matches. The victory also marked Garcia Ruiz's 96th career doubles win, breaking the Oklahoma program record.

The No. 15 duo of Evialina Laskevich and Edda Mamedova clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 victory over Lexington Reed and Daria Smetannikov at court two, improving to 13-2 on the season.

Oklahoma's doubles dominance continued, as the Sooners improved to an impressive 48-6 (.889) overall in doubles matches this spring.

In singles, Oklahoma struck first as No. 54 Mamedova was first off the court, defeating No. 35 Mia Kupres, 6-2, to give the Sooners a 2-0 advantage. The win marked her third ranked singles victory of the season.

Texas A&M answered at the top position, as No. 1 Lucciana Perez topped No. 10 Evialina Laskevich to cut the lead to 2-1.

No. 64 Garcia Ruiz responded for Oklahoma, earning a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Reed at the No. 3 spot to extend the Sooners' lead to 3-1.

Ounmuang then clinched the match at court five, battling to a 7-6 (10), 6-3 win over No. 84 Smetannikov. The victory improved Ounmuang to 14-3 in singles this spring and secured the 4-1 win for Oklahoma.

OU will return to the Headington Family Tennis Center on Sunday to host No. 6 Texas for Senior Day. First serve is set for noon CT. The matchup will mark the second meeting between the two programs this season, as the Sooners outlasted the Longhorns, 4-3, in the first round of the ITA Indoor Championships in Champaign, Ill., in February.
