NORMAN – The No. 8 Oklahoma women's tennis team delivered one of the biggest wins in program history Sunday, defeating No. 1 Georgia, 4-1, at the Headington Family Tennis Center. The victory marked Oklahoma's second win over a top-ranked opponent and extended the Sooners' winning streak to nine matches, their longest since the 2021-22 NCAA runner-up season.
Oklahoma came out strong in doubles, securing its 21st doubles point in 22 matches this spring while improving to an impressive 40-5 (.889) overall in doubles play.
At the No. 2 position, the freshman duo of Evialina Laskevich and Edda Mamedova earned a statement win, defeating Georgia's No. 7-ranked duo of Deniz Dilek and Aysegul Mert, 6-2. The pair improved to 10-1 together this spring and notched their second top-10 doubles victory of the season.
Moments later, the nation's top-ranked duo of Roisin Gilheany and Gloriana Nahum clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win over Anastasiia Lopata and Patricija Paukstyte at court one. The pair remains unbeaten this spring at 3-0 and improved to 12-2 overall on the year.
Carrying that momentum into singles, Georgia struck first with a straight-set win at the No. 3 position, as No. 68 Dilek defeated No. 40 Garcia Ruiz, 6-3, 6-1.
OU reclaimed the lead shortly after, as Nahum grabbed a 6-2, 6-4 victory over No. 97 Sofia Rojas at court six, improving to 11-1 in singles this spring.
No. 72 Mamedova followed the biggest win of her freshman campaign, taking down No. 6 Mert in straight-set fashion, 6-1, 7-6 (6), at the No. 2 spot to give the Sooners a 3-1 advantage.
With the match hanging in the balance, No. 41 Laskevich once again delivered in the clutch, defeating No. 28 Anastasiia Lopata, 6-4, 6-2, at the top singles position to secure the 4-1 victory. The win marked Laskevich's second consecutive match-clincher and extended her singles win streak to eight matches.
Matches on courts four and five went unfinished following the clinch, with Chloé Noël leading 7-6 (6), 3-4 at court four and Salakthip Ounmuang trailing 6-7 (3), 1-3 at court five.
With the win, Oklahoma improves to 19-4 overall and 9-2 in SEC play, notching its fourth top-10 victory of the season.
Oklahoma will hit the road to face Vanderbilt on April 2 at 5 p.m. before traveling to Missouri for a matchup on April 4 at 12 p.m.
