Women's Tennis Set to Host Two Top-15 Teams

NORMANĀ - The Oklahoma women's tennis teamĀ is set to concludeĀ their non-conference home slateĀ with two top-15Ā battles this weekend at the Headington Family Tennis Center. OU will host No. 12Ā San DiegoĀ on Friday before returning on Sunday to host No. 5 North Carolina StateĀ for the squad's fifth and sixthĀ ranked matchups of the season.Ā

MATCHDAY BASICS
Both matches will be played outdoors on the six back courts (far west end). The main gate at the John Crain Soccer Field will be used forĀ fans to enter the outdoor courts as matches will be open to the public and free of charge. Gates will open to fans oneĀ hour prior to the scheduled start time. Fans attending Friday's match will receive free OU tennis t-shirts until supplies last. Sunday'sĀ giveaway will feature pink OU tennis mugs as fans are encouraged to wear pink to cheer on the Sooners.Ā

LAST TIME OUT
The No. 16Ā Oklahoma women's tennis team (3-3) fell toĀ No. 19Ā California, 4-3,Ā in the ITA Kickoff Regional Championship match on Jan. 28.Ā
OU's No. 2 doubles pairing ofĀ Dana GuzmanĀ andĀ Alina ShcherbininaĀ got the match started, defeatingĀ No. 14 Mao Mushika and Hannah Viller Moeller 6-1.
On the singles courts, Julia Garcia Ruiz got the Sooners on the board with a 6-1, 6-2 win at court threeĀ over Valentina Ivanov to make the score 2-1. At court four, No. 16Ā Florencia UrrutiaĀ retired with an injury against No. 36 Katja Wiersholm. The Kentucky transfer held a 6-4, 1-3 advantage before retiring.Ā OU would get twoĀ back, starting withĀ No. 37 Guzman who delivered a 6-2, 6-2 win over No. 12 Viller Moeller before No. 72 Alina Shcherbinina tied the match score with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 win over No. 17 Jessica Alsola on the top court.Ā
In a final singles matchup on court sixĀ to determine a winner, the Golden BearsĀ punched their ticket to the ITA Indoor Championships in a hard fought battle. Cal's Lan MiĀ pulled out a 6-7, 6-4, 6-2Ā win over OU'sĀ Emma StakerĀ to deliver the win for the visitor's.
