Sooners Knock Off No. 12 San Diego

NORMAN - In their first outdoor match of the spring season, the Oklahoma women's tennis team knocked off No. 12 San Diego 4-3 on Friday.
Friday marked the Sooners' second top-25 win of the season.
"I don't think we played our best tennis but we actually stepped up to the big moments that got the job done," head coach Audra Cohen said. "I think this team is starting to find their identity and groove."
The Sooners (4-3) kicked off the match in doubles against the Toreros (5-3). Finishing first, the No. 52 doubles pairing of Julia Garcia Ruiz and Zdena Safarova shut out Jordyn McBride and Kristina Nordikyan 6-0 on court two. Following right behind, Dana Guzman and Roisin Gilheany slid past Mia Mack and Elizabeth Goldsmith at court one with the 6-4 win to clinch the doubles point for OU.
When play was halted, Chloe Noel and Ava Catanzarite were heading to tiebreakers with a 6-6 score against Filippa BruuSyversen and Claudia De Las Heras.
Going into singles with the 1-0 advantage, No. 38 Guzman met No. 69 De Las Heras and delivered a quick 6-0, 6-0 win for the Sooners to extend their lead. Emma Staker joined Guzman in the win column at the No. 6 spot to defeat BruuSyversen 6-2, 6-1.
On court three, No. 98 Ava Catanzarite dropped her match to Elizabeth Goldsmith 0-6, 3-6. Noel competed closely with McBride, ultimately losing her match on court four 5-7, 6-7(2). To even up the score, USD's Abigail Desiatnikov defeated Gilheany 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 on court five. All eyes shifted to court two as No. 93 Garcia Ruiz squared off against No. 49 Mack to determine the match winner. In a high-pressured battle, Garcia Ruiz came out on top by defeating Mack 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 to clinch the win for the Sooners.

The Sooners will be back on Sunday, Feb. 25 to face No. 5 North Carolina State at 11 a.m. CT at the Headington Family Tennis Center.
