Sooners Shine in Impressive Opening Weekend

NORMAN - The Oklahoma men's tennis team dominated the field at the inaugural US Collegiate Cup Invitational in Torreón, Mexico to open the fall season.

"It was great to play such a unique event outside the US and give our guys an international experience to kick off the fall season," head coach Nick Crowell said.

Fifth year senior Baptiste Anselmo, sophomore Luis Alvarez and freshmen Kholo Montsi and Hank Trondson propelled the Sooners to an 11-0 record in singles, highlighted by sweeps of Big 12 foes TCU and Baylor.

Montsi and Alvarez also swept their doubles matches against TCU and Abilene Christian.

Alvarez, a native of Mexico City, went 5-0 on the weekend playing in his home country, while Anselmo began his fifth season with a 4-1 record. Competing for the first time as Sooners, Montsi and Trondson went a combined 8-1 to kick off their OU careers.

"It was great to see Kholo and Hank both go and win their first matches as Sooners and then cap it off by going undefeated (in singles)," Crowell said. "Luis and Baptiste both played very well and used the experience from last season to help them pull through when it mattered most."

Two other Sooners also began their fall season at the Battle of the Bay Tournament in San Francisco, Calif. Fifth year senior Justin Schlageter teamed up with freshman Asahi Harazaki for a pair of wins in consolation doubles.

OU will travel to Tulsa, Okla., for the ITA All-American Championships Sept. 30-Oct. 8.
