Sooners Top UTSA in Season Opener

NORMAN - The Oklahoma men's tennis team opened the 2024 season with a win over UTSA, 5-2, at the Headington Family Tennis Center Saturday.

The Roadrunners scored the doubles point with Alan Magadan and Tomas Pinho defeating Alex Martinez and Kholo Montsi, 4-6. Luiz Alvarez and Jordan Hasson fell short to Tiago Torres and Miguel Alonso in a set tiebreak, 6-7 (5). Mark Mandlik and Nathan Han won their doubles match, winning 6-3 on court two.

"Our guys responded and came back," head coach Nick Crowell said. "I'm impressed how quick our guys got off the court and we only lost 19 games in 4 matches. We had an unbelievable turnout today, Sooner Nation really showed out."

Martinez earned a win in his first set, 6-3, and blazed ahead in the second set, leading 5-1. He won his match against Tiago Torres 6-3, 6-1, and was first to put a singles point on the board for the Sooners.

Montsi immediately broke away, starting his singles match with a 5-2 lead against Jackson Ross and won the first set 6-3. He went on to earn a 4-1 lead in his second set before winning the match, 6-3, 6-2, and putting the second singles point on the board.

Mandlik also took away a 6-3 first set win and went on to earn the third singles point for the Sooners after winning his second set, 6-4, against Garrett Skelly.

Alvarez came away with a 6-1 win in the first set after earning a 4-1 lead. He started his second set with a 2-0 lead and secured the final singles point against Danijal Muminovic with a 6-1, 6-3 win to clinch the match for the Sooners.

Hasson also had a quick lead, starting his first set with 4-1 lead against Tomas Pinho and going on to secure a 6-3 win in his first set. Tomas Pinho took the second set win, sending the match into a split-set tiebreak. Hasson took the win in the tiebreak, 10-7 to win the match.

Singles play concluded with a loss for Justin Schlageter against Alan Magadan on court two, 4-6, 6-7 (4).

Oklahoma will be back at the Headington Family Tennis Center Saturday, Jan. 20 to face Oral Roberts at 1 p.m. CT.
