Sooner Tennis Sweeps Utah State, Advances to NCAA Second Round

NORMAN -- The No. 9 Oklahoma men's tennis team is headed to the Second Round of the DI Men's Tennis NCAA Championships following a 4-0 win over Utah State in front of a home crowd at the Headington Family Tennis Center on Friday evening.

The Sooners are set to take on No. 21 Southern California on Saturday, May 2, at 5 p.m. CT for a chance to advance to the NCAA Super Regionals from May 8-10.

OU started hot with a quick 6-1 doubles win from the dominant duo of No. 5 Luis Alvarez and Bruno Nhavene at court one. The senior pair's victory set up the Sooners at the two line to claim the doubles point with a 6-3 result, sending the squad into the singles portion with a 1-0 lead.

Sophomore Alejandro Melero made quick work of his opponent, coming off the court first with a 6-3, 6-2 score. The back half of the singles lineup continued the straight-set trend and closed out the match with impressive results.

Junior Asahi Harazaki picked up his 12th win of the season after winning court six, 7-5, 6-1. No. 100 Johan Rodriguez continued his impressive freshman season with his 11th win and fifth consecutive victory to seal OU's place in the Round of 32.

The matches on the top three courts were left abandoned at the time of the clinch with No. 25 Luis Alvarez at 6-2, 5-5, No. 76 Oscar Lacides at 7-6(3), 4-2 and No. 68 Orel Kimhi at 6-7(5).

UP NEXT

The Sooners continue their journey in the DI Men's Tennis NCAA Championships and host No. 21 USC on Saturday, May 2, at 5 p.m. CT in the Second Round of the Norman Regional. USC advanced to the second day of the Norman Regional after topping Duke 4-2 in Round One.
