No. 9 Oklahoma Bests No. 8 Texas A&M, Secures No. 4 Seed in SEC Championship

April 12, 2026 | Men's Tennis

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The No. 9 Oklahoma men's tennis team topped No. 8 Texas A&M to close out the regular season with three top-10 wins. After a six-and-a-half hour weather delay, the Sooners sealed a No. 4 seed in the SEC Championship with a three-set thriller on junior Asahi Harazaki's court.

OU claimed the advantage in the doubles portion of the match with wins on courts two and three, each recording a 6-4 score. Court one was abandoned when No. 6 pair Luis Alvarez and Bruno Nhavene were ahead 5-4.

The Aggies struck first in singles where senior Luis Alvarez fell in two sets to No. 15 Theo Papamalamis. The other five singles matches went into three sets to put Oklahoma and Texas A&M on an even playing field as sets were split.

Freshman and No. 94 Johan Rodriguez was the first Sooner to come out on the other side of a three-set battle. He put Oklahoma ahead 2-1 in the dual after dominating his third set, 3-6, 6-3, 6-0.

Courts five and six were on the verge of closing out the match, each with five games in the third set and ahead in the final game to claim the sixth game. Junior Alejandro Melero's result came in first as he won 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 to inch OU closer to its seventh win over a top-15 team.

With Oklahoma ahead 3-1, No. 62 Oscar Lacides and Harazaki raced to the finish line in their competitions to be the clinching point. Harazaki delivered his second clinch on the weekend, 5-7, 6-2, 6-3, and the Sooners finished the regular season on a high note with a total of 12 wins over nationally ranked teams.

The Sooners head into the SEC Championship having tallied a 10-4 conference record and an 18-5 overall record.
