GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The No. 15 Oklahoma men's tennis team (15-5; 8-4) completed its weekend on the road with a 4-3 win over Florida (11-10; 4-6) on Sunday afternoon at the Alfred A. Ring Tennis Complex.
The four-hour showdown saw numerous tiebreaks across singles and doubles and the points were split 3-3 when No. 86 Orel Kimhi closed out the competition with a 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 win on court three.
Each of the three doubles and six singles matches were played to completion and OU came out with the victory to end the weekend with two wins.
The Sooners' doubles lineup did its job, winning two of the three courts to provide the first point in Oklahoma's favor. OU paired sophomores Oscar Lacides and Alejandro Melero together for the second time and the duo claimed their second win together, followed by a tiebreak win from freshman Johan Rodriguez and junior Asahi Harazaki at the three spot.
Later in the dual, the doubles point would prove to be crucial as the Gators won three of the six singles matches, forcing the Sooners to fire on all cylinders in singles to close it out.
No. 34 Luis Alvarez put Oklahoma up 2-0 with a 6-2, 6-4 straight-set victory. Florida went on to win three straight singles points on the back half of the lineup, briefly taking the 3-2 lead in the dual. The Sooners tied it back up at three-all with a win from No. 58 Oscar Lacides on court two. Lacides' 6-4, 7-6(6) result extended his singles win streak to four.
Kimhi clinched the road win for Oklahoma after he battled in the third set to win 6-4, 5-7, 6-4. He has won three straight singles competitions and notched his second ranked win of the season over No. 59 Henry Jefferson.
The top-15 Sooners return to the Headington Family Tennis Center for the regular-season home finale against No. 6 Mississippi State on Saturday, April 4, at noon CT.
