NORMAN - The No. 13 Oklahoma women's tennis team is set to face No. 3 Georgia in super-regional competition on Friday, May 12 at 4 p.m. CT in Athens, Ga.
This marks back-to-back years where the squad has reached the Sweet 16, after advancing for the first time in program history in 2022.
The Round of 16 will be held in Athens, Ga., at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. Fans can follow along via live stats and live stream here.
The Sooners came out strong in doubles, taking courts two and three. No. 63Ā Alexandra Pisareva andĀ Layne SleethĀ defeated Astrid Olsen and Jennifer Kerr 6-1 on court two andĀ Julia Garcia Ruiz andĀ Dana GuzmanĀ secured the opening point 6-4 against Sarah-Maude Fortin and Zehra Suko at the No. 3 spot.
The momentum headed into singles. Garcia Ruiz got things started on court five, taking the match 6-1, 6-2 over Matsuda. Washington claimed its only point at the No. 4 spot, with Kerr defeating Pisareva 6-3, 6-3. OU answered with back-to-back court wins to take the match. No. 78 Guzman grabbed the 6-2, 6-2 victory over Fortin and No. 50 Sleeth took down No. 109 Sato at the top court, 6-4, 6-1.
Oklahoma currently has three in the singles rankings with No. 50 Layne Sleeth, No. 78 Dana Guzman and No. 110 Carmen Corley. In doubles, Carmen and Ivana Corley lead the squad at No. 5 and Alexandra Pisareva and Layne Sleeth come in right behind at No. 63.
The Bulldogs have five in the ITA singles rankings: No. 3 Lea Ma, No. 4 Dasha Vidmanova, No. 63 Mell Reasco, No. 81 Anastasiia Lopata and No. 125 Meg Kowalski. They're highlighted by two doubles pairs: No. 25 Guillermina Grant and Mai Nirundorn and No. 60 Meg Kowalski and Mell Reasco.
Georgia is currently 24-4 and reached the Sweet 16 after sweeping Florida State 4-0 in the second round of the NCAA tournament.
The Sooners met Georgia earlier this season in the ITA National Indoor quarterfinals and fell 5-2, with Pisareva and Staker grabbing court wins.
A win on Friday would send OU to Orlando, Fla., and into the Elite Eight toĀ face the winner of No. 5 Michigan vs. No. 12 Virginia.
