Guzman, Shcherbinina Take Home ITA All-American Title

NORMAN – Dana Guzman and Alina Shcherbinina claimed Oklahoma's first ITA All-American doubles title Sunday afternoon at the ITA All-American Championships in Cary, N.C.

The duo won seven straight matches, including three in the qualifying draw to become the first Sooner pairing in program history to advance to the doubles final at the ITA All-American tournament.

In the championship match, the duo defeated No. 46 Melodi Collard and Annabelle Xu of Virginia in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.

On their way to the finals, Guzman and Shcherbinina defeated three ranked opponents, including two top-20 opponents in No. 12 Mai Nirundorn and Guillermina Grant (Georgia) and No. 19 Mary Stoiana & Mia Kupres (Texas A&M).

Florencia Urrutia also had a deep run at the tournament, falling just shy of the consolation finals match. Urrutia won all three of her qualifying singles matches to advance to the main draw, defeating No. 18 Tanya Sasnouskaya of Texas in her final qualifying match.

After falling in her opening round match of the main draw, she won a pair of consolation matches before falling in the semifinals to the eventual consolation bracket champion, No. 8 Anastasiya Komar of Oklahoma State.

The Sooners will be back in action Oct. 12-16 for the ITA Central Regionals in Lawrence, Kan.
