January 12, 2024 | Women's Tennis
NORMAN - The No. 13 Oklahoma women's tennis team opened the 2024 season with a pair of wins over Wichita State and Wyoming on Friday.
Friday marked the start of a highly competitive six-match home stretch to start the year.
"I thought we did a good job of getting the first match jitters out of the way while competing well," head coach Audra Cohen said. "I'm impressed with how well a lot of our new players handled themselves in an incredibly new environment and they had great poise along with the rest of the team. We have to take away the lessons we've learned and get better moving forward."
The Sooners kicked off the match in doubles against the Shockers. Finishing first, Dana Guzman and Alina Shcherbinina shut out Xin Tong Wang and Natsumi Kurahasi 6-0 on court one. Following right behind, Chloé Noël and Julia Garcia Ruiz slid past Kristina Kudryavtsev and Jessica Anzo at court three with the 6-3 win to clinch the doubles point for OU.
When play was halted, Roisin Gilheany and Florencia Urrutia held a 5-3 advantage over Giorgia Rosellia and Theodora Chantava.
Going into singles with the 1-0 advantage, Garcia Ruiz met Anne Knuettel and delivered a quick 6-1, 6-1 win for the Sooners to extend their lead. Guzman joined Garcia Ruiz in the win column at the No. 4 spot to defeat Anzo 6-1, 6-2.

Wrapping up the Sooners first match, transfer Ava Catanzarite battled at court five but fell to Theodora Chantava 6-7, 6-2 (8-10).
OU's second match against Wyoming opened with a clinched doubles point for the Sooners. On court three, Romana Cisovska and Gilheany took the win over Lucia Malinak and Serina Abriola 6-0. At the No. 2 spot, Noël and Garcia Ruiz went up against Noesjka Brink and Nikol Dobrilova and grabbed the 6-2 victory to secure the advantage.
