Sweep Over Charlotte Sends OU To Championship

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The Oklahoma men's tennis team swept Charlotte, 4-0, Friday in its first match of the ITA Kickoff Weekend to advance to the championship match.

The Sooners will face the winner of host No. 11 Tennessee and Louisiana on Saturday at 12 p.m. CT, with the victor qualifying for the ITA National Indoor Championships in Chicago, Ill., Feb. 17-20.

"Today was a good way to start the National Indoor Kickoff Weekend," said OU head coach Nick Crowell. "The team battled back at one doubles to clinch the opening point."

Doubles action opened with a quick 6-2 win on court three from seniors Baptiste Anselmo and Justin Schlageter over Brett Gloria and Aditya Narayanan. Charlotte's Matias Iturbe and Ivan Dreycopp came back at the No. 2 spot to take the win 6-3 against Nathan Han and Jordan Hasson.

The top court took control with OU's Alex Martinez and Siphos Montsi defeating Coy Simon and Abhi Vannemreddy, 6-3, to clinch the opening point.

With the 1-0 advantage, the Sooners entered the singles portion with quick leads on multiple courts. No. 62 Schlageter was first to secure his spot, taking down Narayanan 6-0, 6-4 on court five. To extend OU's lead, No. 50 Han defeated Vannemreddy at court three, 6-1, 6-2. Newcomer Montsi clinched OU's third sweep of the season in a 6-1, 6-4 fashion at the No. 4 spot over Dreycopp.

When play was halted, No. 57 Martinez was battling at the top court, leaving the match 2-6, 4-3 against Simon. Hasson led Iturbe 6-3, 4-1 on court two and Anselmo was up 6-4, 4-0 over Gloria.

"I liked how we jumped out to big leads in singles on most courts," said Crowell. "The guys finished them off by playing our game and with confidence. We will go get ready to take on the winner of Tennessee or Louisiana!"
