TEAM

OU Falls To No. 11 Tennessee in Championship

January 28, 2023 | Men's Tennis

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The Oklahoma men's tennis team fell 4-3 to No. 11 Tennessee in the ITA Kickoff Weekend championship match on Saturday.

The match opened in doubles and battled for the opening point. At the top court, Alex Martinez and Siphos Montsi fell 6-4 to Pat Harper and Johannus Monday. Nathan Han and Jordan Hasson took the match to a tiebreaker, but fell 7-6 (7) to Emile Hudd and Angel Diaz on court two. When play was halted, Baptiste Anselmo and Justin Schlageter were at 6-6 (3-1) with Shunsuke Mitsui and Tomas Rodriguez.

OU didn't shy away from putting up a fight in singles play. No. 62 Schlageter took the first win on court five over Martim Prata, 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 to tie the match. Tennessee answered with a court-six win from Angel Diaz over Anselmo, 7-6 (10), 6-3.

The Sooners went on to take the next two courts. Hasson grabbed the 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-2 win over No. 59 Shunsuke Mitsui on court two and Montsi took down No. 81 Emile Hudd, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (3) on court four to take the lead for OU. Tennessee tied the match at court three as No. 86 Blaise Bicknell secured the 6-7 (7), 7-6 (5), 6-3 win over Han.

With a trip to the ITA National Indoor championships on the line, it came down to the top court. In a back-and-forth battle, Martinez forced a third set to continue OU's hope to make it to Chicago. Johannus Monday ultimately took the match 6-4, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (2) over Martinez to claim Tennessee's victory.

"Today was one of the best collegiate matches I've been a part of in a long time," said OU head coach Nick Crowell. "This team has heart, guts and a bond that will take us a long way. We will make a few improvements in areas that will help us close out that match next time. I believe Sooner Nation should be excited and proud of this group of young men."
