OU Wins Bedlam in Norman

NORMAN — The Oklahoma men's tennis team defeated Oklahoma State 4-3 at the Headington Family Tennis Center, Friday evening, to open conference play.

OU's victory improves the squad to 13-5 on the season.

"Going into the match we knew it was going to be a tough one today," head coach Nick Crowell said. "Bedlam is always a big time match. Oklahoma State did a great job and played a great match. It came down to the very end."

The Cowboys struck first, claiming the doubles point with victories on courts one and two. Oklahoma's Mason Beiler and Nathan Han tallied a quick 6-2 win on court three against Leighton Allen and Joseph Chen. OSU's Alex Garcia and Maxim Verboven responded with a 6-3 victory on court two over Baptiste Anselmo and Mark Mandlik. No. 46 Alex Martinez and Welsh Hotard fell to No. 37 Tyler Zink and Sebastian Nothhaft 7-6 (4) in a tiebreak.

"Doubles point was really tight and came down to a tiebreaker," Crowell said. "I was really proud of our guys and how they came back and fought off a lot of match points."

No. 101 Mandlik struck first for OU, tallying a 6-3, 6-4 win over Verboven on court four. No. 125 Jordan Hasson finished next for the Sooners, defeating Allen 6-0, 6-4 on court five. Justin Schlageter continued the momentum for OU with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Chen on court six.

The Cowboys struck back with Zink defeating No. 60 Beiler 2-6, 4-6 on court one. Martinez clinched the match for OU in 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 fashion against Garcia at the No. 2 spot following a 10 minute rain delay that moved competition indoors. Oklahoma State closed out the match on court four with Nothhaft tallying a 7-6 (5), 2-6, 6-2 victory over Anselmo.

The Sooners will travel to Texas to face Texas Tech and Baylor, April 8 and 10, respectively.
