STILLWATER, Okla. - The Oklahoma women's tennis team racked up 19 wins and a trip to the ITA National Fall Championships at the five-day ITA Central Region Championships in Stillwater.
Julia Garcia Ruiz, Dana Guzman, Alexandra Pisareva and Emma Staker represented the Sooners and earned first-round byes to open the tournament.
Garcia Ruiz, a freshman from Morelia, Mexico, highlighted the tournament with a trip to the finals, after tallying five-straight wins over Diana Cabrera (Missouri State), Chie Kezuka (ISU), No. 102 Laia Conde Monfort (Tulsa), Mae Canete (Missouri) and Alana Wolfberg (OSU). She eventually fell to Carolina Gomez Alonso (Arkansas) 4-6, 3-6, in the title match, but punched her ticket to the ITA National Fall Championships in November.
"We are extremely proud of Julia," said head coach Audra Cohen. "She stayed resilient and outworked her opponents all week. Her positive energy and belief in herself are deserving of a spot in ITA Fall nationals. This is just the beginning for Julia!"
Pisareva went on a three-match streak and advanced to the quarterfinals with her win over Arkansas' Kelly Keller, 6-3, 6-3, but fell short against Alana Wolfberg.
Advancing to the round of 16, Guzman claimed two victories over Sofia Cabezas (ISU), 3-6, 6-3, 6-1, and Andrea Artimedi (Missouri), 6-3, 6-1, before falling to Missouri's Mae Canete.
Staker also racked up a win against Daniela Hlackiova (SMSU), taking the match 6-3, 6 (2)-7, 6-1, contributing to the team's 19 wins.
Both Pisareva/Staker and Garcia Ruiz/Guzman advanced to the semifinals in the doubles draw.
Pisareva and Staker claimed four-straight wins, advancing to the semifinals after the 8-7 (5) victory over Oklahoma State's Miyamoto/Novak.
On the other side of the bracket, Garcia Ruiz and Guzman paired up to collect four wins. The duo advanced to the semifinals after taking down Oklahoma State's Gonzalez/Wolfberg 8-5, but fell to the future doubles champions, Kajura/Kezuka (ISU) 6-4, 7-6 (5).
The Sooners will return to the court with those who qualify for the ITA National Fall Championships in San Diego, Calif., Nov. 2-6.
