Back-To-Back Shutouts Open the 2023 Season

NORMAN - The No. 4 Oklahoma women's tennis team opened the 2023 season with a pair of wins over Missouri and Tarleton State on Saturday.

A combined 245 fans set a new season-opener attendance record for both matches.

The Sooners kicked off the match in doubles against the Tigers. Finishing first, Dana Guzman and Julia Garcia fell to Emelie Schwarte and Mae Canete 6-2 on court three. Following right behind, Ivana and Carmen Corley slid past Laura Masic and Inah Canete at the top court with the 6-2 win.

Court three saw back-and-forth action to claim the opening point. Ultimately, No. 22 Layne Sleeth and Alexandra Pisareva clinched the doubles point for OU, winning 6-4 over Gabriela Martinez and Andrea Artimedi.

Going into singles with the 1-0 advantage, Carmen Corley met No. 66 Masic on court two and delivered a quick 6-2, 6-2 win for the Sooners to extend their lead. Guzman joined Corley in the win column at the No. 4 spot to defeat Inah Canete 6-0, 6-3.

To clinch OU's first win of the season, newcomer Garcia Ruiz flew through her match to take the 6-0, 6-2 victory over Andrea Artimedi.

The remaining courts played on and No. 86 Pisareva continued the Sooners run with her 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 [10-5], win over Emelie Schwarte on court three. Staker claimed the next victory for OU at the No. 5 spot, taking the 7-5, 7-6 (4) win over Gabriela Martinez. Wrapping up the Sooners first match, Sleeth battled at the top court to claim her first win of the season. The senior grabbed the 7-6 (10), 5-7, 1-0 [11-9] win against Mae Canete to give OU their first sweep of the season and the 7-0 win.

OU's second match against Tarleton State opened with a clinched doubles point for the Sooners. On court three, Staker and newcomer Romana Cisovska took the 6-2 win on court three over Celia Vaudiau and Clara Sobius. At the No. 2 spot, Guzman and Garcia Ruiz went up against Emma Persson and Ximena Morales and grabbed the 6-2 victory to secure the advantage.

When play was halted, Sleeth and Pisareva were tied at 4-4 with Elsa Boisson and Martha Makantasi at the top court.

Singles opened with Sleeth taking the 6-0, 6-1 win at court two over Emma Persson and Guzman with the 6-0, 6-0 shutout against Elsa Boisson at the No. 3 spot.

Cisovska clinched the match 4-0 for the Sooners in her singles debut on court six, defeating Clara Sobius 6-2, 6-1.

The remaining courts were halted from play. Carmen Corley was up 6-4, 2-1 against Martha Makantasi at the top court, Garcia Ruiz led 6-3, 2-1 over Celia Vaudiau on court four and Ivana Corley was up 6-1, 5-2 at the No. 5 spot against Ximena Morales.

The Sooners will be back on Tuesday, Jan. 17 to face Wyoming at 5 p.m. CT at the Headington Family Tennis Center.
