NORMAN - The Oklahoma women's tennis will begin dual play this Saturday at the ITA Kickoff Weekend with the Sooners headed to Durham, N.C.
OU (4-0) will square off against Furman on Saturday at 1 p.m. CT in the first round, while host and No. 6 Duke will face Nebraska to open the weekend's action.
The Sooners will face either the Blue Devils or the Cornhuskers, with the consolation match scheduled Sunday at 9 a.m. CT and the championship match set for 1 p.m. CT. The winner from each site earns a trip to Madison, Wisc. to compete in the 2022 ITA National Indoor Championship, schedule Feb. 11-14.
LAST TIME OUT
The team concluded their first week of the 2022 season with a 5-2 victory over South Carolina and a sweep against Tarleton State.
Against the Gamecocks, the Sooners clinched the doubles point from
Layne Sleeth and
Alexandra Pisareva on court two, 6-3. In singles, Sleeth was once again part of the clinching match point, defeating No. 28 Ayana Akli, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4, on court two.
The sweep over Tarleton State was achieved by
Anchisa Chanta and
Marcelina Podlinska clinching the doubles point, 6-0, on court three, while
Emma Staker secured the win for the Sooners in singles, taking down Anna Hosking at the No. 6 spot, 6-0, 6-0.
FACING FURMAN
The Paladins (3-1) enter the weekend coming off a 3-4 loss against No. 25 Auburn.
Furman will be accompanied by No. 45 Julia Adams and No. 65 Sara Snyder.
SCOUTING NO. 6 DUKE
The No. 6 Blue Devils are 2-0, both wins coming from ranked opponents, No. 10 Ohio State and No. 23 Princeton.
Duke currently has four ranked singles players, No. 15 Chloe Beck, No. 26 Emma Jackson, No. 48 Elizabeth Coleman, and No. 73 Georgia Drummy. Additionally, they hold three ranked doubles spots, No. 10 Kelly Chen and Eliza Omirou, No. 20 Chloe Beck and Margaryta Bilokin, and No. 60 Chloe Beck and Elizabeth Coleman.
TRACKING NEBRASKA
The Cornhuskers will enter the weekend with a 1-0 record after defeating Creighton, 7-0.
Nebraska ended their 2020-21 season with an 11-6 overall record, with eight players returning for the 2021-22 season.
