OU Advances To Championship Match

NORMAN — The No. 17 Oklahoma women's tennis team secured the victory over Furman, 4-1, Saturday in the first round of the ITA Kickoff Weekend in Durham, N.C.

With the win, the Sooners will battle Sunday against No. 6 Duke at 1 p.m. CT in the championship match.

"Really proud of how we responded after the doubles point," said head coach Audra Cohen. "We gained momentum early in the first sets of singles and then we kept fighting until the job was finished."

At the start of the match, OU dropped the doubles point, giving Furman a 1-0 lead after taking court one and two. On court two, Layne Sleeth and Alexandra Pisareva fell 3-6 to Madison Dillon and Ellie Schulson. Clinching the point for the Paladins, Julia Adams and Ellie Schoppe came out victorious after taking down OU's Ivana and Carmen Corley, 5-7, at the top line.

Anchisa Chanta and Marcelina Podlinska were down 5-6 to Sara Snyder and Jess Dawson when play was haulted on court three.

In singles, the Sooners came out win four-straight wins. On court two, Sleeth defeated Madison Dillon, 6-1, 6-2, to get Oklahoma on the board to tie the match.

Carmen Corley gave OU the lead after taking down No. 45 Julia Adams, 6-2, 6-4, at the top spot. Freshman Emma Staker took the No. 6 spot, defeating Ellie Schulson 6-4, 6-1, making the lead 3-1.

Chanta clinched the match for the Sooners, with a ranked win against No. 65 Sara Snyder, taking it to three sets on court four, 5-7, 6-2, 6-2.

Play was haulted when Ivana Corley was down 6-2, 3-6, 3-4 on court three against Ellie Schoppe, while Pisareva was tied 4-6, 6-3, 4-4 against Jess Dawson at the No. 5 spot.

The Sooners will return Sunday at 1 p.m. CT to play in the championship match against No. 6 Duke.
