OU Earns First Ranked Win of the Season

NORMAN — The No. 19 Oklahoma women's tennis claimed victory over #23 Princeton, 4-3, at the Headington Family Tennis Center on Tuesday.
"Credit to Princeton for playing a great match today," said head coach Audra Cohen. "They stayed tough and made us earn every single point. We will celebrate this one and then get back to work on a few things before we battle again on Friday."
In doubles, Anchisa Chanta and Emma Staker finished first for the Sooners with a 6-4 victory over Princeton's Leena Bennetto and Maia Sung on court three. Ivana and Carmen Corley clinched the doubles point, 7-6 (7-3) for an OU victory over seventh-ranked doubles pair Daria Frayman and Grace Joyce at the top line.
Layne Sleeth and Alexandra Pisareva were up 6-6 in a tiebreaker with Brianna Shvets and Nathalie Rodilosso when play was halted on court two.
Over in singles, Chanta was the first Sooner to finish against Zoe Howard, notching a 6-3, 6-4 on court four to tally another point for Oklahoma.
In the No. 5 spot, Pisareva defeated Neha Velaga, 6-2, 7-6 (3), to put OU in a 3-0 lead. Princeton put a point on the board when No. 23 Victoria Hu took the victory over No. 83 Ivana Corley, 5-7, 4-6, on court two. No. 16 Sleeth then fell to No. 60 Brianna Shvets, 6-4, 2-6, 3-6, on court three. Staker, ranked No. 101, played a tough battle against Leena Bennetto on court six, 6-4, 6-7(4), 4-6.
Claiming the victory for OU, #105 Carmen Corley drew the upset against No. 4 Daria Frayman at the top line with a thrilling final of 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 to give the Sooners a 4-3 match win.
"I'm extremely proud of Carmen and this entire program," said Cohen. "Carmen embraced the moment and stayed focused on the things she could control. Today was a result of her resillience and growth mindset throughout her career and I could not be more proud of her!"
UP NEXT
The Sooners host a pair of matches, Jan. 21 and 22, at the Headington Family Tennis Center. OU kicks off competition against South Carolina at 5 p.m. CT on Jan. 21. On the 22nd, Oklahoma will hit the court at 3 p.m. to face Tarleton State. Admission to both matches is free.
