NORMAN – No. 23 Oklahoma held strong for a 5-2 win over Wichita State Friday in the Sooners' first of three matches this weekend.
OU (3-2) dropped the doubles point but powered back with five singles wins to claim the match.
"After we lost the doubles point, we needed a couple of guys to come out quick and
Justin Schlageter was able to get off the court really fast for us and put a point up on the board, and that's what we needed to regain a little momentum," said head coach
Nick Crowell.
"We got four first sets and that was a big key to the match.
Mason Beiler coming back after losing the first kind of shut down a little of their momentum and then we were able to close it out in some third sets. Give credit to Wichita State, they're a very good team."
In doubles action,
Nathan Han and
Alex Martinez came away with a win over the No. 32 pair in the nation. Sooners Han and Martinez held on for a 7-6 (6) victory over Wichita State's All-American duo of Murkel Dellien and Marius Frosa at the top spot.
Mark Mandlik and
Welsh Hotard fell to WSU's Luka Mrsic and Stefan Latinovic 6-1 at the No. 2 line and
Justin Schlageter and
Max Stewart were defeated by Shockers Orel Ovil and Nicolas Acevedo 6-2 on court three.
The Shockers took a 2-0 lead in singles as OU's Mandlik fell to WSU's Frosa 6-0, 6-4 on court one.
Schlageter put the Sooners on the as he took down Acevedo 6-3, 6-2 on court five to extend his winning streak to three straight matches.
Martinez came out on top of a three-setter with Ovil on court four, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3. Han grabbed a win just seconds later on court six as he held strong through a second-set breaker with WSU's Mrsic to win 6-3, 7-6 (4) and give OU a 3-2 lead in the match.
ITA No. 69 Beiler clinched the win for the Sooners with a victory over Latinovic on court two. The junior gave up the first set 6-4, but powered back to claim set two 6-3 and force a deciding frame. The final set went to a tiebreaker, but Beiler used a huge serving game to put away Latinovic 7-1 in the breaker.
"It's a familiar position for me," said Beiler of his tiebreaker. "I've been in a few spots like that before and I was trying to play my game and just trust what I knew I could do and go from there."
"Mason is super consistent in his work ethic and shows up every day. You know you're going to get his best effort," said Crowell. "Once you get down to a tiebreaker in the third, anything can happen but he stepped up to the plate and got the win for the Sooners today."
.
The final match played out as Van Emburgh held strong for a 6-2, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (3) win over Dellien on court three.
