January 31, 2021 | Men's Tennis

NORMAN – No. 23 Oklahoma split Sunday's competition, falling to SMU in a tight 4-3 decision before sweeping Abilene Christian 4-0 in the second match of the day.
Against SMU, OU (4-3) opened the match with the doubles point before trading singles wins with the Mustangs in the first meeting between the teams since 1999.

In doubles, Jake Van Emburgh and Matt Rodriguez struck first with a dominant 6-3 win over SMU's Caleb Chakravarthi and Huntley Allen at the No. 3 spot.

SMU leveled things as Thomas Vaise and Juan Jose Bianchi defeated OU's Nathan Han and Alex Martinez 6-4 at the top spot and the point came down to court two. Mason Beiler and Max Stewart battled SMU's Liam Krall and Julian Steinhausen to a tiebreaker and came out on to 7-6 (5) to win the opening point for the Sooners.

Han made quick work in singles, taking down Clarke Wilson 6-4, 6-2 on court six to put OU up 2-0 in the match.

SMU got on the board when the Mustangs' Vaise defeated Martinez 5-7, 7-4, 6-2 on court four, but OU answered with Van Emburgh's 6-3, 7-6 (8) win over Jan-Simon Vrbsky at the No. 3 line for a 3-1 lead.

Mark Mandlik fell to SMU's Krall 7-6 (6), 2-6, 6-4 on court two, and Justin Schlageter fell  Steinhausen 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-2 at the No. 5 spot, bringing the contest to be decided on court one. Beiler battled Chakravarthi to a third set, but dropped to the Mustang 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.

OU came out firing against ACU, winning the doubles point handily. Han and Martinez shut out Wildcats Savan Chhabra and Riley Tran 6-0 at the top spot, then Beiler and Stewart clinched the point with a 6-2 rout of Joaquin Delgado and Oswaldo Cano-Sosa on court two.

When play was halted, Van Emburgh and Rodriguez led Jose Maria Rastroj and Mihaly Deli 5-2 on court three.

Schlageter was the first player off the court in singles when he took out Cano-Sosa 6-1, 6-3 on court three. Freshman Welsh Hotard gave up just three games en route to a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Rastroj at the No. 6 line.

Senior Van Emburgh clinched the win with a 6-2, 6-1 route of Chhabra on court one.
