Sooners Sweep Oral Roberts in 2021 Opener

NORMAN – The Oklahoma women's tennis team hit the ground running Saturday, shutting out Oral Roberts 7-0 to open the 2021 season.

"It was great to get back on the court," said head coach Audra Cohen. "We have great opportunities to continue to improve as a program."

In doubles, Oral Roberts forfeited at the No. 3 spot, meaning the Sooners needed just one win to claim the opening point.

Martina Capurro and newcomer Dana Guzman gave up just one game as they took out Oral Roberts' Gorana Kadijevic and Zere Iskakova 6-1 on court two to secure the point for the Sooners.

The top court played out and Ivana Corley and Carmen Corley defeated Oleksandra Nahurska and Aliksandra Lebedeva 6-2.
With their victory, the Corley sisters improve to 22-1 as a pair since Carmen's arrival in Norman in January 2020.

"I think it's important they continue to grow and improve," said Cohen. "They haven't by any means reached their capacity – they have a lot of room to grow."

Oral Roberts forfeited at the No. 6 spot to give OU a 2-0 advantage headed into singles play.

Ivana Corley struck first for the Sooners, routing Isakova 6-1, 6-0 at the three spot. Marcelina Podlinska clinched the win for the Sooners as she powered past ORU's Rai Sengupta 6-0, 6-1, at the No. 5 line.

The remaining matches played out. Carmen Corley gave up just one game in a 6-0, 6-1 defeat of Nahurska at the top spot.

Guzman grabbed her first collegiate win in a 6-2, 6-1 defeat of Kadijevic on court four.
"[Dana] handled herself really well and showed her poise and that's she's played at a high level," said Cohen. "She's here to play."

Martina Capurro completed the sweep of Oral Roberts with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Lebedeva at the No. 2 line.
