NORMAN - The Oklahoma men's and women's track and field teams opened the 2019 John Jacobs Invitational at home Friday evening.
The Sooners competed in four throwing events and a single race on the track, but continue their only regular season home meet Saturday with a full slate of events.
OU opened competition with a sweep of the top collegiate marks in Friday's four field events. Redshirt junior Meia Gordon earned the top spot among collegiate competitors in the women's shot put with her mark of 59-0.75 (15.56m), finishing only behind unattached competitor and former Sooner Jess Woodard, who recorded a meet-record throw of 59-0.75 (18.00m). Freshman Faith Ette came in third overall with a mark of 50-3.25 (15.32m), while sophomore Lauren Jones followed with a 46-1.5 (14.06m). Redshirt freshman Lauryn Jones recorded a throw of 44-5.5 (13.55m).
In the men's shot put, sophomore Cooper Campbell once again took first with his personal-best throw of 61-5 (18.72m) for first place. Junior Brad Daboub came in second with a mark of 58-3.25 (17.76), and freshman Kristo Simulask recorded a personal record of 45-3.5 (13.80m) for fifth place.
The Sooners also competed in both hammer throws. Lauren Jones recorded the top mark of collegiate competition at 188-0 (57.30m). Redshirt freshman Camille Burge tossed it 156-8 (47.76m) for the fourth-best college mark, and Lauryn Jones claimed sixth with a throw of 146-11 (44.79m).
Sophomore Edward Jeans took home the men's hammer throw title with a throw of 201-11 (61.54m). Freshman Bayley Campbell threw a U20 hammer for a mark of 232-0 (70.73m).
In Oklahoma's first event on the track for the weekend, redshirt senior Brendan Taylor earned a second-place finish with a time of 15:10.37. He finished behind Eric Casarez, who ran a 14:35.26 while competing unattached.
The John Jacobs Invitational resumes Saturday morning at 10 a.m. CT with the women's javelin throw. Action on the track picks up at 12:30 p.m. with the women's 4x100-meter relay. At 2 p.m., Oklahoma will honor the 2019 graduating class. The Sooners will close out the meet at 3:40 p.m. in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase, and the invitational will conclude with the men's 4x400-meter relay at 4 p.m.
Admission to day two of the John Jacobs Invitational is free.
