Men's Tennis Comes Up Short to Kentucky in Friday Matchup

NORMAN – The No. 20 Oklahoma men's tennis team fell short to Kentucky, 4-3, at the Headington Family Tennis Center on Friday evening despite coming out on top in three ranked contests across singles and doubles.

Oklahoma won the doubles point and two singles matches but Kentucky took the dual with singles results on courts one, three, five and six.

The Sooners claimed their tenth doubles point of the season with on courts one and two. After the pair on court three fell to the Wildcats, the pair on court two notched a 6-2 win to set the senior pair on court one up for the ranked upset and clinching victory. No. 53 duo Bruno Nhavene and Luis Alvarez sealed the doubles point in Oklahoma's favor after topping Kentucky's No. 19 pair, 6-3.

Oklahoma and Kentucky were evenly matched in the singles draw, sitting at three-points-all near the end of the competition.

Kentucky won the first two singles matches at the one and three spots where No. 45 Alvarez fell to No. 24 Eli Stephenson, 3-6, 2-6 and sophomore Orel Kimhi took a tough 0-6, 3-6 loss.

OU's tying singles wins came from the even courts with wins at the two and four positions. No. 108 Oscar Lacides was responsible for Oklahoma's second point in the match, coming away with a 6-4, 6-4 score at the two line. Lacides' win was quickly followed by a 6-4, 6-4 triumph by freshman Johan Rodriguez at the four spot. Rodriguez's result marked his second ranked win of the season.

The final point relied on junior Hank Trondson on court six. Trondson won the first set but dropped the second set, needing an edge in set three to clinch the dual. After back-and-forth games and numerous deuce points, Trondson ultimately fell short 6-4, 5-7, 3-6 and Kentucky took the victory.
