NORMAN – The No. 7 Oklahoma women's tennis team kicked off SEC play Sunday with a doubleheader at the Headington Family Tennis Center, earning a morning win over No. 62 Arkansas before capping the day with a victory against Air Force.
Oklahoma opened conference play in dominant fashion, shutting out No. 62 Arkansas, 4-0.
The Sooners took control early in doubles. The No. 44 freshman duo of Edda Mamedova and Evialina Laskevich were first off the court, cruising to a 6-1 win over Brooke Schafer and Jimena Gomez Alonso on court two. Julia Garcia Ruiz and Salakthip Ounmuang followed with a 6-2 victory against Alexandra Panagiotidou and Arina Babenko at the No. 3 position, clinching the doubles point and securing their team-leading eighth doubles win of the season. The top-court match featuring No. 1 Roisin Gilheany and Gloriana Nahum went unfinished.
Carrying momentum into singles, No. 18 Garcia Ruiz wasted no time extending the lead, defeating Schafer, 6-1, 6-1, on court two. Ounmuang followed with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Babenko at the No. 5 spot to push the Sooners within one point of the match.
Junior Chloé Noël clinched the victory for Oklahoma on court four, earning a 6-2, 6-4 win over Panagiotidou to secure the 4-0 sweep.
Matches on courts one, three and six went unfinished following the clinch.
The Sooners once again set the tone in doubles against Air Force. Mamedova and Laskevich were first to finish, earning a 6-2 victory over Shivaani Selvan and Arianna Van Houweling on court two to secure their second doubles win of the day.
Moments later, the top-ranked duo of Gilheany and Nahum sealed the doubles point with a 6-2 win over Abby Cotuna and Sofia Mavor on court one.
In singles, Oklahoma quickly created separation. Ounmuang was first to close out her match, delivering a dominant 6-0, 6-1 win over Yule Kang at the No. 4 position. Nahum followed with a commanding 6-1, 6-0 victory against Maya Michalski on court five to extend the Sooners' lead.
Noël clinched the match once again, this time at the No. 3 spot, defeating Sofia Mavor, 6-1, 6-4, to secure the 4-0 victory.
Matches on courts one, two and six went unfinished following the clinch, with Laskevich leading 6-0, 5-1, No. 18 Garcia Ruiz ahead 6-1, 4-1, and Oyinlomo Quadre in front 6-3, 3-0.
Oklahoma continues SEC play Thursday, Feb. 26, hosting No. 13 Auburn at the Headington Family Tennis Center before traveling to Gainesville, Fla., to face Florida on Feb. 28.
