Men's Tennis Ends Run at ITA All-American Championships

TULSA, Okla. -- The Oklahoma men's tennis team completes its run at the ITA All-American Championships at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on Thursday afternoon. Senior Luis Alvarez advanced to the round of 32 where he fell to three-seed Jay Friend.

In the first day of main draw competition, Alvarez persevered in three sets to claim a win over Ohio State's Nikita Filin,Ā 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, to advance to the round of 32.Ā Sophomore Oscar Lacides also competed in the singles main draw. In the round of 64, LacidesĀ was ahead in the third set, 5-7, 6-3, 5-4, over UCLA's Spencer Johnson. Lacides ultimately lost the match due to the point penalty system. Lacides and teammate Bruno Nhavene competed in the doubles main draw, where they fell short to Florida's Tanapatt Nirundorn and Henry Jefferson, 6-7(4), 5-7.

In the round of 32, Alvarez faced three-seed Jay Friend of Arizona. After battling for three sets, Alvarez came up short, 4-6, 6-1, 1-6, and moved to the consolation bracket.

Alvarez picked up a win in the consolation draw over the ITA preseason No. 35, Top NidunjianzanĀ of Princeton with aĀ 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 result. In his next match, the Mexico native fell short to NC State'sĀ Martin Borisiouk,Ā 6-3, 6-4.

In his consolation match, Lacides' opponent retired due to injury. The sophomoreĀ was ahead 3-0 when the match was called off. In the following round, Lacides fell to Columbia'sĀ Nicholas Kotzen,Ā 6-3, 7-6(9).

In doubles consolation play, the Sooner pair picked up a win over Baylor'sĀ Ā Zsombor Velcz and Connor Henry Van Schalkwyk,Ā 6-7(6), 6-3, 10-8. The duo fell in the next round toĀ Manfredi Graziani and Aaron Sandler of Penn, 6-4, 7-6(1).

Alvarez earned a main-draw position in the tournament following his success over the summer in various ITF and ATP tournaments. Prior to competing in the ITA All-American Championships, he earned the ITF M15 Fayetteville singles title to kick off fall play. LacidesĀ ended his freshman season ranked inside the top-125 in ITA's singles rankings. He was ranked in each of the ITA singles rankings throughout the season. In doubles, Lacides and NhaveneĀ finished their first season together ranked inside the top-10 at the No. 9 spot in the ITA doubles rankings.

UP NEXT

The Sooners return to their home courts to host the ITA Central Region Championship. Competition begins on Wednesday, Oct. 8 and continues throughĀ Sunday, Oct. 12. Teams traveling to Norman for the regional include Nebraska, Arkansas, Memphis, Tulsa, Oklahoma State, Wichita State, North Dakota, Creighton and Nebraska (Omaha). Draws, schedules and further tournament information will be released at a later date.Ā
