Sooner Tennis Sweeps ITA Central Regional, Qualifies Four for NCAA Individual Championships

NORMAN -- The Oklahoma men's tennis team capped off its home ITA Central Regional Championship on Sunday by claiming all three NCAA Individual Championship qualifying positions with two in singles and one in doubles. Sophomore Oscar Lacides and senior Luis Alvarez shared the regional singles co-champion title and freshman Johan Rodriguez and sophomore Orel Kimhi were named the regional doubles champions.

In the opening round of main-draw play, all eight Sooners picked up singles wins to advance to the round of 32 and all four doubles teams moved on to the round of 16. Of all eight singles matches, Oklahoma only dropped two sets to opponents. In the singles round of 32, sophomore Alejandro Melero fell short to Arkansas's Ben Weintraub, 3-6, 3-6.

In the round of 16, sophomores Asahi Harazaki and Hank Trondson dropped their matches. The ITA Central Regional marked Trondson's return to the court after sustaining an injury in the 2024 season.

Five of eight quarterfinals spots were held by Sooners as Lacides, Alvarez, Rodriguez, Kimhi and senior Bruno Nhavene advanced to day three. Lacides, Alvarez and Rodriguez advanced to the seminfinals as the Sooners held three of the four spots, guaranteeing at least one Sooner in the finals.

In semifinals, Lacides claimed a 6-3, 6-0 win over Rodriguez and Alvarez posted a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Moritz Kudernatsch of Memphis to advance to the finals. The pair opted to not play the championship match as both athletes automatically qualified to the NCAA Championships in Orlando by virtue of being finalists.

With each of the four Sooner doubles teams in the round of 16, day three of competition saw all four pairs advance again to the quarterfinals. In quarterfinal action, Lacides and Nhavene fell to Tulsa's Connor Doig and Calum Jestin, 7-8(4) and Trondson and Harazaki came up short against Connor Smillie and Jakub Vrba of Arkansas, 7-8(5).

In the semifinals, Kimhi and Rodriguez went through to the finals with a 7-5, 7-6(2) victory over Jestin and Doig. Alvarez and Melero fell to Smillie and Vrba, 4-6, 4-6.

Kimhi and Rodriguez claimed the doubles title with a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Smillie and Vrba.

The final NCAA qualifying event is the ITA Central Sectional, scheduled for November 6-9.
