Sooners Advance to Saturday’s Second Round

NORMAN – The Oklahoma men's tennis team advanced to the NCAA Norman Regional second round with a 4-0 victory over UT Arlington Friday afternoon at the Headington Family Tennis Center. This is the 11^th straight season the Sooners have advanced to at least the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Sooners jumped out to the early lead, grabbing the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 courts. Hank Trondson and Asahi Harazaki earned a quick 6-1 victory on court three before No. 58 Alex Martinez and Baptiste Anselmo clinched the point with a 6-4 victory at the premier spot.

Luis Alvarez claimed the first singles point for the Sooners, giving OU the 2-0 lead. At the No. 4 line, the sophomore topped Meethre Barot 6-1, 6-2.

No. 10 Martinez pushed the lead to 3-0 with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Joan Torres Espinosa at the No. 1 line. Martinez extended his win streak to 12-straight matches, improving his season record to 19-4.

Mark Mandlik clinched the victory for Oklahoma at the No. 6 line. After battling in a tight first set, Mandlik cruised in the second to defeat Yazid Lahjomri, 7-5, 6-0, sending the Sooners to Saturday's regional finale.

Oklahoma will face Stanford, who defeated SMU 4-0, on Saturday at 1 p.m. CT at the Headington Family Tennis Center. The winner will advance to Super Regionals held May 10-11 at a site to be determined.
