Women's Tennis Concludes Home Slate with BYU, Texas Tech

NORMAN - Following back-to-back shutout wins on the road, the No. 23 Oklahoma women's tennis team is set to close out the home portion of its schedule with matches against No. 36 BYU on Thursday and No. 26 Texas Tech on Saturday afternoon at the Headington Family Tennis Center. 

MATCHDAY BASICS 

First serve against the Cougars is set for 5 p.m. CT on Thursday. Fans can keep up with the action through live stats here. Tennis ball throwers will be provided to fans entering the Headington Family Tennis Center until supplies last. Free international snacks as part of the International Night theme will also be provided for fans in attendance. 

Saturday's match against the Red Raiders is scheduled for 12 p.m. CT. The contest can be followed through live stats here. OU visors will be provided to fans entering the Headington Family Tennis Center until supplies last. Free pizza will also be provided for fans in attendance.

SENIOR DAY 

OU will celebrate the career seniors Dana Guzman and Florencia Urrutia at Saturday's match against Texas Tech.

A four-year member of the program, Guzman has represented the University of Oklahoma well both on and off the court. On the court, Guzman was named to the 2023 All-Big 12 Singles First Team and has twice been named to the Big 12 All-Tournament Team for both singles and doubles. Her career record in singles stands at 75-27, while her doubles record stands at 84-23. 

An engineering major, Guzman was named to the 2022 Academic All-Big 12 First Team. 

Urrutia, who transferred to Oklahoma for her senior year, spent two seasons of her career at Kentucky and two at Miami. This season, Urrutia ranks third on the team in singles wins, holding a 19-9 overall record. The Santa Fe, Argentina native has also posted a 7-3 doubles record. 

Urrutia was a Second Team All-SEC honoree in 2023 and an ITA Scholar Athlete in 2020. 

LAST TIME OUT 

The No. 22 Oklahoma women's tennis team picked up their second shutout win of the week on Saturday afternoon, sweeping Kansas 7-0.

The Sooners opened the match by claiming their 14th doubles point of the season. No. 20 Dana Guzman and Roisin Gilheany were first to finish as they defeated Jocelyn Massey and Gracie Mulville at the top court, 6-1. Kansas would get one back, as Kyoka Kubo and Heike Janse Van Vuuren knocked off No. 55 Julia Garcia Ruiz and Zdena Safarova, 6-2 on court two. 

Ava Catanzarite and Chloe Noel clinched the opening point on court two, defeating Tamari Gagoshidze and Maria Titova 6-3.

Grabbing the first singles win on court one, No. 39 Garcia Ruiz took down Gracie Mulville 6-4, 6-2. Extending the lead, No. 95 Alina Shcherbinina secured the 6-3, 6-1 win at court three against Kubo. Emma Staker clinched OU's 12th win of the season with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Jasmine Adams on court six. 

The match played out and gave the remaining three courts a chance to tally another win. No. 34 Guzman was next to take the victory, defeating Titova 6-1, 6-4 at the No. 2 spot. Noel added another point for the Sooners as she grabbed the 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-4) court-five win. To finish the sweep, No. 50 Florencia Urrutia took down Van Vuuren 1-6, 6-2, 7-6 (8-6) on court four.

IN THE RANKINGS 

The Sooners (12-5, 7-2 Big 12) currently have five players in the ITA singles rankings. Leading the pack is No. 29 Julia Garcia Ruiz, followed by No. 40 Dana Guzman, No. 55 Florencia UrrutiaNo. 97 Alina Shcherbinina and No.121 Ava Catanzarite.

In doubles, OU is represented by No. 3 Guzman and Shcherbinina, followed by No. 19 Guzman and Roisin Gilheany, and rounded out by No. 71 Garcia Ruiz and Zdena Safarova.  

The Cougars (14-4, 6-3 Big 12) are also represented in the polls, with No. 105 Yujia Huang in singles as well as No. 53 Emilee Astle and Kendall Kovick in doubles. 

Representing the Red Raiders (15-5, 8-1 Big 12) is No. 39 Cristina Tiglea in singles, and No. 6 Metka Komac and Avelina Sayfetdinova in doubles. 

UP NEXT 

The Sooners will close out the regular season with a pair of conference clashes on the road, beginning with a match against No. 35 Baylor on Friday, April 12 at 12 p.m. CT, followed by a matchup with No. 62 TCU on Sunday, April 14 at 1 p.m. CT.
