Sooners Advance to Big 12 Semifinals

STILLWATER, Okla. — No. 3-seed Oklahoma defeated No. 6-seed Baylor 4-0 in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Championships on Thursday afternoon.

With the win, OU advances to play No. 2-seed Texas on Friday at 6 p.m. CT in the semifinals.

The Sooners (18-5, 11-2 Big 12) were first to get on the board by claiming their 19th doubles point of the season over the Bears (17-12, 7-6 Big 12).

The No. 48 doubles pairing of Julia Garcia Ruiz and Zdena Safarova struck first on court two, defeating Zuzanna Frankowska and Liubov Kostenko, 6-1. Following closely behind, the duo of Alina Shcherbinina and Chloe Noel clinched the doubles point for OU with their 6-2 win over Sierra Berry and Isabella Harvison of Baylor at the No. 3 spot.

When play was halted at the top court, No. 20 Dana Guzman and Roisin Gilheany led Baylor's Miska Kadleckova and Danielle Tuhten, 5-3.

No. 115 Shcherbinina, a Baylor transfer, grabbed the first singles win on court three by taking down Kostenko 6-1, 6-1. Extending the lead, Staker secured the 6-2, 6-0 win at court six against Tuhten. No. 43 Guzman clinched OU's 18th win of the season with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Harvison on court two.

When play was halted, No. 31 Garcia Ruiz was up 6-4, 3-1 over No. 117 Kadleckova on the top court, No. 60 Florencia Urrutia held a one-set advantage over Zuzanna Kubacha 6-4, 2-4 on court four and Noel was leading in the final set of her match against Tuhten, 6-1, 3-6, 2-1 at the No. 5 spot.
