Sooners Take Road Win Over BYU

NORMAN - The Oklahoma men's tennis team wrapped up the first weekend of Big 12 play with a 4-2 victory over BYU to improve to 2-0 in league play.

The doubles point went to the Sooners after wins from fifth-year seniors Baptiste Anselmo and Alex Martinez on court one and freshman pair Hank Trondson and Asahi Harazaki on court three. Fifth-year senior Mark Mandlik and junior Jordan Hasson were leading 6-5 when doubles play was stalled.

The first point for the Cougars came after Hasson dropped his match on court three, but the Sooners reclaimed the lead after freshman Kholo Montsi took a straight-set win, 6-4, 6-4, at the two line.

The Sooners went up 3-1 when sophomore Luis Alvarez won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, over Redd Owen on court four. The Cougars took another singles win when fifth-year senior Justin Schlageter lost his match in a third set.

No. 20 Martinez clinched the match for the Sooners in the third set over BYU's Jack Barnett, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4.

Mandlik won a tiebreak on court six to split sets with BYU's David Duong and was trailing 1-2 in the third set when the match was stalled.

UP NEXT

The Sooners return to Norman to take on No. 2 TCU at the Headington Family Tennis Center on Thursday, March 28 at 5 p.m. The team is back on the road for a match on Saturday, March 30 against UCF at 5 p.m.
