Men's Tennis Opens 2023 Season With Trio of Matches

NORMAN - The Oklahoma men's tennis team is set to open the 2023 season with three matches between Saturday and Sunday at the Headington Family Tennis Center. The match vs. Bryant on Saturday starts at 1 p.m. and the Sooners retake the court on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. vs. UTSA and 3 p.m. vs. Montana State.

MATCHDAY BASICS

The Sooners' 2023 matches at the Headington Family Tennis Center will be open to the public and free of charge. Due to the elimination of concessions at the Headington Family Tennis Center, fans are encouraged to bring in their own food and drinks. Free pizza will be provided to the first 100 fans at Saturday's match, while also be provided with Rudy's breakfast burritos, donuts and hot chocolate for Sunday's morning contest. OU follows aĀ clear bag policy.

THE 2023 SOONERS

Oklahoma returns seniors Baptiste Anselmo, Mark Mandlik, Alex Martinez and Justin Schlageter; junior Nathan Han; and sophomore Jordan Hasson.

The team adds newcomers Jip van Assendelft, a freshman from the Netherlands, Siphos Montsi, an All-American transfer from Illinois, and Luis Valdes who arrives to Norman from Mexico City.

Head coach Nick Crowell enters his seventh season with the program, holding a 91-57 record. During the preseason, Crowell added associate head coach Ben Dunbar to his staff. Dunbar joins the Sooners after a five-year head coaching tenure with the University of New Mexico, where he led the Lobos to back-to-back Mountain West Conference championships.

2022 IN REVIEW

The Sooners made their 12th consecutive NCAA appearance after facing 10 top-25 matchups.

OU kicked off their season with a 4-1 ranked-win over No. 25 Illinois during ITA Kickoff Weekend. They then went on a five-match win streak that led them to sweep No. 18 Texas A&M 7-0 at home for the Sooners' most-attended match of the season.

The squad notched two All-Big 12 accolades as alum Mason Beiler was named to the singles second team, while Beiler and then-sophomore Nathan Han finished in a three-way tie for doubles No. 3 position.

Beiler was also named Big 12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year and Crowell earned the ITA Central Region Coach of the Year honor.

UP NEXT

The Sooners will travel to Tennessee for ITA Kickoff Weekend for the Jan. 27-28 weekend. They will face Charlotte for their match on Friday, Jan. 27.
