Sooners Rack Up 19 Wins at ITAs

TULSA, Okla. - The Oklahoma men's tennis team concluded their time at the ITA All-American Championships on Wednesday, sending two Sooners to the Main Draw bracket.

Our guys have continued to improve over the fall," said head coach Nick Crowell. "We did a lot of good things out in Tulsa. We had guys with some major break throughs and we were able to execute on some of the important details we've been focusing on this year. I'm excited to see us compete next week at the Regional Championships."

OU tallied 19 wins over the course of the six-day tournament, with the Sooners competing in prequalifying, qualifying and main draws.

Senior Justin Schlageter, newcomer Jip van Assendelft, freshman Aiden Robinson and junior Nathan Han opened the tournament in the prequalifying bracket on Saturday.

Schlageter went on to collect seven straight wins, moving passed the qualifying round into the main draw, the first Sooner to do so since Ferran Calvo in 2017. Along the way, he tallied a win over No. 110 Ryan Colby (USC) and defeated Clemson's Ryuhei Azuma 6-1, 7-5, 6-4 to advance to the main draw. Schlageter eventually fell to No. 38 Dan Martin (Miami) to end his noteworthy run.

Assendelft kicked off his time in Tulsa with two back-to-back wins over UT-Arlington's Solano Caffarena, 6-2, 6(4)-7, 6-2, and Lousiana's Alejandro Sanchez Gonzalez, 6-1, 6-3.

Robinson joined in with his first win wearing the Crimson and Cream, tallying a win over Mississippi State's Seth Richey, 5-7, 6-0, 6-3. Han also collected a victory over Penn State's Miko Eala, 7-6 (1), 6-2, in the opening round of the prequalifying consolation draw.

The qualifying bracket also saw singles action from Alex Martinez, Baptiste Anselmo and Mark Mandlik, while two duos competed in the doubles portion.

Martinez took three wins, two being over ranked opponents, to advance to the main draw after defeating Rafael Iziquierdo Luque (NC State) 5-7, 6-3, 7-6 (0). The senior matched up against No. 16 Micah Braswell (UT) in the round of 64, but fell 7-6 (5), 3-6, 6-1 to enter into the consolation bracket.

Anselmo ended his time at the tournament with a win over Gonzaga's Sasha Trkulja, 6-0, 6-4.

The No. 51 Sooner duo of Han and Martinez tallied wins over Stanford's Basing/Basavareddy, 6-2, 6-3, and UNC's Murphy/Zapp, 6-3, 7-6 (3) before falling to Arizona State's No. 32 Cassone/Bullard 6-3, 6-3.

The Sooners are set to take the court again at the ITA Central Region Championships in Fayetteville, Ark., beginning Oct. 13.
