NORMAN – Oklahoma junior
Carmen Corley has been named the Big 12 Player of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday.
The Sooners had a successful opening-week of the 2022 spring season. After contributing to the sweep against Wyoming, Corley and the team met No. 23 Princeton just the next day at home.
Corley kicked off the match in doubles with teammate and sister
Ivana Corley on court one. They faced No. 7 doubles pair Daria Frayman and Grace Joyce to clinch the doubles point for OU, 7-6 (7-3). In singles, Corley secured her first ranked win of the season in only the second match of the year against No. 4 Daria Frayman in a hard-fought battle at the No. 1 spot, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, to clinch the match for the Sooners, 4-3, her highest-ranked singles win of her career.
In Oklahoma's face-off with South Carolina, Corley had another successful day in doubles with
Ivana Corley, defeating the No. 37 doubles pair Megan Davies and Allie Gretkowski at the top line, 6-1, to give the Sooners their first court win of the day. Oklahoma ended the match with a 5-2 victory.
Closing out the four-game home stand, Corley and freshman
Emma Staker secured OU's first win of the day in doubles on court two, shutting out Tarleton State's Natalia Komar and Martha Makantasi, 6-0. Corley went on to finish the Sooner sweep, taking down Deniza Marcinkevica, 6-3, 6-1, at the top line to give OU their fourth-straight win to remain undefeated.
This is Corley's fourth career Big 12 Player of the Week honor and first this season. The accolade is OU's first of 2022.
Corley and the Sooners are back in action Saturday at 2 p.m. ET as they travel to Durham, N.C. for the annual ITA Kickoff Weekend.
