Sooners Close Weekend in Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE, Wis. — Oklahoma women's tennis player Emma Staker won a pair of matches en route to the consolation final of the Milwaukee Tennis Classic over the weekend, where she fell in three sets in her collegiate debut.

Staker, a freshman from Tulsa, Okla., defeated two players to advance into the final at her first collegiate tournament. The blue-chip recruit, who came to Norman as the No. 24 player in the country, defeated Miami's (OH) Laura Rico 6-4, 6-2; followed by a 6-3, 6-2 victory Grace Piper of No. 27 USC.

Staker was joined at The Classic by the nations' No. 1 doubles pairing in Carmen and Ivana Corley. The top-seeded Corley sisters advanced to the semifinals of the doubles bracket, tallying a 6-3 win over Masic/Staiculescu (Indiana); and a 6-1 win over Adams/Devier (UNT) before falling to Ramasamy/Rico (Miami) 6-4.

Both Corley sisters competed in the singles bracket, earning two individual wins to advance into the quarterfinals. Carmen Corley secured a first-round win over Ludmila Kareisova (Ole Miss) 6-4, 6-4; and a 6-3, 6-2 victory of UNT's Jasmine Adams. Ivana Corley tallied her first win over Portland's Sally Pethybridge 6-1, 6-2; and Brindtha Ramasamy of Miami (OH) 6-2, 6-2.

The Sooners will split with a group traveling to the Fall Ranked Invite in Cary, N.C., and another competing in the ITF Lubbock 15k in Lubbock, Texas, Sept. 24 and 25, respectively.
