Sooners Storm Past Shockers

May 04, 2021 | Softball

WICHITA, Kan. — The No. 1 Oklahoma softball team (40-1, 14-0) collected its 30th run-rule victory of the season Tuesday night in Wichita, Kan., beating No. 25/RV Wichita State 14-3 in five innings.

Junior Grace Green blasted her second career grand slam while freshman Tiare Jennings batted in four runs and sophomore Mackenzie Donihoo brought in three.

The scoring began in the second with the Sooners plating four runs on four hits. A leadoff single from Grace Lyons prior to a perfectly-placed bunt single from Jayda Coleman and a walk to Nicole Mendes set up a bases-loaded walk to Jana Johns.

Still in the second, Donihoo plated a pair on a single that got away from the Shocker second baseman before Jennings laced an RBI single to right for the Sooners' fourth run in the frame.

OU put two more across in the fourth. Mendes led off the inning with a double before making her way home on a WSU throwing error. Jennings then ripped her second hit of the game to bring in Donihoo following her walk.

The Sooners exploded for eight runs on six hits in the fifth inning. Rylie Boone entered as a pinch hitter and hit an RBI single to score Lyons after Lyons led off the frame with her third leadoff hit of the game.

Donihoo brought her RBI tally to three in the contest with a run-scoring double before Jennings tallied her third and fourth runs batted in of the game on a single to center.

Entered as a pinch hitter, Green launched her second career grand slam and the Sooners' seventh of the season to finish the OU scoring in the fifth inning. The home run marked OU's 115th of the season, tying the program record for home runs in a season with the 2019 team, reaching the mark in 23 less games.

The Shockers (37-11-1, 18-5-1 AAC) plated three in the bottom of the fifth on a double and an OU error to break the shutout campaign and bring the final score to 14-3, Sooners.

Lyons went a perfect 3-for-3 in the box while Jennings finished 3-for-4 with four RBIs and Donihoo went 2-for-2 with a trio of runs batted in. 10 Sooners recorded a hit in the contest with five batting in at least one run.

Redshirt senior Shannon Saile kept the second-best home run hitting team in the country at bay, allowing just one hit and no runs in 4.0 innings pitched to go with one strikeout and three walks. Saile collected her 13th win of the season in the circle.

Freshman Nicole May closed the game for OU, allowing one hit and three runs, only one being earned.

The top-ranked Sooners look to finish the regular season strong in Stillwater, Okla., May 7-9 against No. 7/9 Oklahoma State. Game one Friday evening is set for a 6 p.m. CT start on ESPN+ before a 3 p.m. first pitch Saturday on ESPN and an 11 a.m. finale Sunday on ESPNU.
