Marder Returns as Director of Player Development, Fryer Named Video and Analytics Coordinator
NORMAN — Oklahoma Softball head coach Patty Gasso announced Thursday the addition of Sam Marder and Billy Fryer to the support staff. Marder spent the 2021 season with the Sooners as the director of softball analytics and returns to OU as the director of player development. Fryer will serve as the video and analytics coordinator for the Sooners.
Sam Marder - Director of Player Development
Marder most recently served as the associate head coach at the University of Oregon from the summer of 2021 through the 2026 season where she was named National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Assistant Coach of the Year. Marder was a part of the 2025 Women's College World Series team with the Ducks and also earned 2024 and 2025 NFCA Regional Coaching Staff of the Year honors.
With the Sooners in 2021 Oklahoma went on to win the national title with unprecedented numbers. Marder oversaw scouting reports, analytics and statistical breakdowns for the Sooner offense. Marder has also had stops in various roles at Ohio State, Boise State, Charleston and Texas Tech since 2010. Prior to that she was a three-time All-American softball player at Ohio State, graduating with the program record in career home runs (61), RBIs (191) and walks (232). She was a 2016 Ohio State Hall of Fame inductee and went on to be drafted to pro softball in 2011 by the Akron Racers of National Pro Fastpitch where she was the league offensive MVP in 2012.
Billy Fryer - Video and Analytics Coordinator
Fryer comes to Oklahoma as the video and analytics coordinator with experience in a number of roles in sports data analysis. Most recently he served as a data challenge coordinator with SportsMEDIA Technology (SMT) where he worked heavily in the professional baseball space.
Prior to that he worked as a basketball data analyst with the Indiana Fever of the WNBA. With the Fever he developed scouting reports and post-game recap data summaries and assisted with other front office requests. The Fever would go on to the WNBA Playoffs in 2024 for the first time in eight years. He was also a part of two highly successful programs as a student data and video analyst at North Carolina State. In 2021 the Wolfpack reached the Men's College World Series Semifinals while he worked as a data analyst, while the women's basketball team won a pair of Atlantic Coast Conference Championships and advanced to the NCAA Elite 8 in 2022.
