OU Drops Series Opener at OSU
May 07, 2021 | Softball
STILLWATER, Okla. — The No. 1 Oklahoma softball team dropped the series opener to No. 7/9 Oklahoma State, 6-4, Friday night in Stillwater.
It marked OU's first regular season Big 12 loss since 2017 and first loss to the Cowgirls since 2011.
The Sooners (40-2, 14-1) got on the board first in the second inning. Following a leadoff single from sophomore Kinzie Hansen, freshman Jayda Coleman hit Oklahoma's 116th home run of 2021 on a two-run shot to left field. The blast set the single-season program record for home runs, breaking the 2019 team's 115 mark in 22 less games.
Oklahoma State (40-6, 15-1) responded in the bottom of the second with a solo shot from Reagan Wright to pull the Cowgirls within one.
Senior Jocelyn Alo hit her nation-leading 26th home run of 2021 and 80th of her career in the top of the third to put OU up three runs. OSU responded again in the bottom frame of the inning, hitting a pair of two-run home runs to take a one-run lead.
OSU added a run in the fifth on its fourth home run of the night, a solo shot from Kiley Naomi.
The Sooners got an opportunity in the top of the seventh, putting two on base via a single from senior Jana Johns and walk to Jocelyn Alo. After pinch-hitter Grace Green hit into a fielder's choice to take away OU's lead runner, a strikeout and groundout ended OU's chances at a comeback.
All 10 runs of the game came via home run with OSU hitting four to Oklahoma's two.
Coleman paced OU at the plate with a 2-for-3, two RBI showing. Alo batted in two runs on her home run to go with a 1-for-2, two walks-drawn performance.
Redshirt senior Giselle Juarez took her first loss of the season in the circle, surrendering five runs on five hits in 2.1 innings pitched with two strikeouts and one walk. Freshman Nicole May (3.2 IP) finished the game for the Sooners, giving up just one run on one hit with one strikeout.
OU's 57-game consecutive Big 12 regular season win streak comes to a close with the loss. It was OU's first loss in conference play since April 23, 2017 to Baylor. The loss marks Oklahoma State's first win over OU since April 27, 2011, and the Cowgirl victory is head coach Kenny Gajewski's first win over OU (previously 0-14).
The teams will meet Saturday in Stillwater for game two at 3 p.m. CT on ESPN prior to an 11 a.m. finale Sunday on ESPNU.
