NORMAN – The No. 33 Oklahoma women's tennis team earned its third straight win and first over a ranked opponent this season as the Sooners routed No. 29 Texas Tech 5-2.
"The doubles point was a lot of energy. I felt like both teams played a lot of great tennis," said OU head coach
Audra Cohen. "It came down to a few great points of execution and we did a really good job of staying calm and focusing on our game plan and executing the way we wanted to and took that momentum into singles. In singles, we problem solved on a lot of courts and just took our momentum and went with it. We didn't take our foot of the gas."
The Sooners (6-2) took the doubles point in a thriller. On court three,
Kianah Motosono and
Dana Guzman shut out Tech's Komac and Olivia Peet. Sooners
Martina Capurro and
Camila Romero fell to Lady Raiders Nell Miller and Margarita Skriabina after a tiebreaker, 7-6 (5), to leave the point to be decided on court one. There, Carmen and
Ivana Corley held strong to defeat Tech's Lisa Mays and Kaitlin Staines 7-5.
In singles,
Carmen Corley was the first player off the court as she put up a dominant 6-1, 6-2 win over Tech's Mays, the reigning Big 12 Player of the Week, at the top spot.
"Carmen came out just on fire and just kept it going," Cohen said. "It was a big confidence boost for Carmen. We've been working a lot on building trust in match play and she did it well today."
Guzman stuck next and the freshman secured her first win over a ranked opponent with a 6-2, 6-3 rout of ITA No. 100 Staines.
"Dana is just high-level tennis," said Cohen of the newcomer. "She just reads the court so well and knows what her opponent is going to do. She just counter-attacks so well that it's dangerous. She stayed really focused today."
For the second straight match, Motosono provided the clinching win and pushed her winning streak to seven matches. The junior battled her way back from a 5-2 deficit, winning five straight games to take her first set 7-5 and kept the momentum rolling to win her second set with Komac 6-1.
"Ki is just a great competitor. Her energy is awesome," Cohen said. "She stayed really calm when she was down 5-2 in the first and came back to 5-5 and played a lot of really good pressure points to get to 7-5 and win the first set and didn't take her foot off the gas in the second. I'm really proud of how well she's competing, moving and how much confidence she has."
The remaining matches played out. After a battle,
Ivana Corley fell to Skriabina 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 [6] on court three. At the No. 4 spot, Capurro dropped to Miller, 6-1, 1-6, 6-1.
In the last match on, Podlinska prevailed after a 10-point tiebreaker. The junior gave up her first set 6-3, but turned the tables in set two to win it 7-5 and took the breaker 10-7 to close out the day for the Sooners.
