OU Beats Tulsa, Wins Fourth Straight

March 06, 2021 | Women's Tennis

NORMAN – The No. 33 Sooners picked up their fourth straight win and completed a season sweep of Tulsa Saturday as OU defeated the Golden Hurricane 5-2 on the road.

The Sooners improve to 7-2 on the season.

"This weekend was kind of tough. We played at home and turned around and came to Tulsa the very next day, played inside yesterday and outside today. We handled the adversity of change really well," said OU head coach Audra Cohen.

OU opened the match with the doubles point. On court three, Dana Guzman and Kianah Motosono downed Tulsa's Laia Conde Monfort and Gabriella Charalampidi 6-2. Martina Capurro and Camila Romero secured the opening point with a 6-4 victory over Shura Poppe and Valeryia Rozenkova at the No. 2 spot.

When play was abandoned, Carmen and Ivana Corley were locked in at 5-all with No. 22 Martina Okalova and Vera Ploner.

Capurro was the first Sooner off the court in singles, giving up just two games as she routed Rozenkova 6-0, 6-2 at the No. 4 line.

Marcelina Podlinska struck next, defeated TU's Ploner 6-2, 7-5 on court five. Freshman Guzman clinched her first match in a 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 comeback win over Tulsa's Poppe at the No. 2 line. Guzman has won three straight matches playing on court two.

"Dana came on a little bit slow today and her opponent was on fire in the beginning. Dana really stayed calm and just went to work and figured out how to play the match tactically and got the job done in the third set," Cohen said. "I'm proud of her for stepping up as a freshman and it was good to see her play a three-set match and win comfortably."

On court one, Carmen Corley battled No. 86 Okalova to a third set, but came up short 7-5, 4-6, 6-2. Motosono suffered her first loss of the season as she fell to Lian Benedejcic after a 10-point tiebreaker, 7-6 (5), 4-6, 1-0 [7].
