Sooners Tame #15 Wildcats

March 22, 2021 | Men's Tennis

NORMAN – The No. 28 Oklahoma men's tennis team opened the week with a 4-1 upset of No. 15 Arizona Monday in Norman.

OU (8-8) opened the match with the doubles point, then reeled off three singles wins to put away the Wildcats.

"We've been working hard all year long and these guys came out today and got great starts in doubles," said OU head coach Nick Crowell. "We were up breaks on all three courts pretty quickly and finished off the doubles in style. I thought our guys played aggressive and all the things we've been working on in practice, we saw them execute all day long.

"Our goal was to come out here and play really, really hard in singles and get up on every court, and we basically did that and it was just nice to finish in straight sets on three courts and get a 4-1 win today."

In doubles, Nathan Han and Alex Martinez struck first for the Sooners with a 6-2 win over Arizona's Jeff Middleton and Jonas Ziverts at the top spot. In their first match together, Max Stewart and Mark Mandlik clinched the opening point with a 6-3 victory over Filip Malbasic and Gustaf Strom on court three.

When play was halted, Mason Beiler and Jake Van Emburgh led Carlos Hassey and Alejandro Reguant 4-3 on court two.

Beiler was the first Sooner off the court in singles after he routed No. 54 Malbasic 6-2, 6-1 on court two to give OU a 2-0 advantage.

Arizona got on the board as Jake Van Emburgh fell to No. 50 Ziverts 6-3, 6-3 at the top spot, but the Sooner quickly responded as Welsh Hotard took out Nick Lagaev 6-3, 6-4 on court six.

Mandlik clinched the victory with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Hassey at the No. 5 line. The sophomore finished the match on a pair of aces to secure the upset for the Sooners.

"Mark had a big day today," Crowell said. "He hasn't been in our doubles lineup as much this year but really came though big getting that W and served it out with two aces at the end of the match at 5-4 in the second against a really good player. It was great to see Mark just get out there and play his game and have fun doing it."

"It felt really good to be home. We've had a lot of tough matches against really good teams and we hadn't been able to get through that barrier, but today we finally did it," Mandlik said. "It's all the guys together. We've all been working so hard and I couldn't be more proud of this team."

Martinez was in a third set with No. 105 Strom on court three when play was abandoned. The freshman took the first set 6-0 before Strom won set two 6-4 and took a 2-0 lead in the third.

Han trailed Reguant 4-1 in the second set on court four. Han won set on 6-4, but railed 4-1 in the second.
