Sooners Notch 12 Wins at Regionals

IOWA CITY, IOWA — The Oklahoma women's tennis squad concluded their four-day run at the ITA Central Region Championships in Iowa City, Iowa, hosted by the University of Iowa.

Ivana Corley, Sasha Pisareva, Marcelina Podlinska, Layne Sleeth, and Emma Staker represented the Sooners at the tournament. The squad flew home tallying a total of 12 victories in singles and doubles.

Pisareva and Sleeth ended their doubles run with three wins under their belts. With a first-round bye, they advanced and tallied a 6-2 win over Morini/Nahurska (ORU) to enter the round of 32. They defeated Vasupongchai/Ishimura (UCA), 8-6, to advance to the round of 16. Notching their final victory against Duong/Said (UMN), 8-1, they advanced to the quarterfinals where they fell to Arkansas' Rice/Cross, 8-2.

Podlinska and Staker contributed in doubles with a first-round bye and a victory over Timofeyeva/Cardona (UMKC), 6-1. Their run ended short after falling 8-3 to Kansas State's Dekkers/Gheorghita in the round of 32.

After a first-round bye in singles, No. 60 Corley defeated Darta Dalecka (UNI), 6-1, 6-1, to advance to the round of 32. She racked up another win against Kansas State's Rosanna Maffei, 6-4, 6-4, to continue her run. She then advanced to the quarterfinals after taking down Ayumi Miyamoto (OSU), 7-6, 3-6, 7-5. She fell to Malkia Ngounoue, 6-3, 6-3 in the quarterfinals to end her time in Iowa.

Pisareva received a first-round bye in singles to defeat Natsumi Kurahashi (WSU), 3-6, 7-5, 7-6(7), to join the round of 32, before falling to Kansas State's Maria Linares, 6-7(4), 6-3, 6-1.
 
Podlinska followed the rest with a first-round bye in singles before defeating Shura Poppe (Tulsa), 6-3, 6-0, to advance to the round of 32. Adding another victory for the Sooners, she tallied a 6-0, 7-6(4) win over Miska Kadleckova (ISU) to enter the round of 16. Her run ended against Rachel Hanford (UMN), 6-0, 6-4.
 
During her successful doubles run, No. 95 Sleeth managed to rack up multiple victories in singles. Like the others, she received a first-round bye before defeating Dinara Alloyarova (KSU), 6-3, 6-0, to advance to the round of 32. She entered the round of 16 after tallying a 6-2, 6-3 win over Oklahoma State's Dariya Detkovskaya. She fell short to Kansas' Maria Titova, 6-3, 6-1, to end her singles play.
