COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Oklahoma grad transfer Jonathan Sheehy's run at the ITA Summer National Championships came to an end Tuesday morning in the final.
Sheehy was edged by Texas A&M's Hady Habib in the championship match, 6-1, 6-4.
Sheehy's run at the tournament included a 6-1, 7-6 victory over Austin Krajicek, who reached a career-high ATP ranking of No. 94 in the world, in the quarterfinals.
In the semis, Sheehy rallied from a first-set loss to defeat Andrew Rogers of Tennessee, 4-6, 6-4, 1-0, to earn a spot in the final.
Sheehy will join the Sooners from Abilene Christian University, where he played at the No. 1 line in singles and doubles during his senior season. Sheehy was ranked as high as No. 77 in the ITA singles ranking and picked up wins over the No. 29, 31, 51, 69, 87 and 113 players in the nation over the last calendar year.
The Arlington, Texas, native won both the singles and doubles titles at the 2019 Oracle ITA Summer Championships. By virtue of his wins there, Sheehy earned an automatic bid for the 2019 ITA All-American main draw.
He finished his career at Abilene Christian with a 63-36 mark in singles, good for third all-time, and 49-36 in doubles for sixth in program history.
At ACU, Sheehy was a three-time All-Southland Conference selection, five-time conference player of the week and the 2017 Southland Conference Freshman of the Year. Additionally, he was a four-time Southland All-Academic team honoree and three-time Commissioner's Honor Roll member.
Sheehy will come to Norman in the fall as part of
OU's No. 13-ranked recruiting class, which includes Nathan Han and Welsh Hotard, who have been rated as high as No. 2 and 4, respectively, by tennisrecruiting.net.
