NORMAN – Oklahoma men's tennis coach
Nick Crowell announced the addition of graduation transfer Jonathan Sheehy on Friday.
Sheehy will join the Sooners from Abilene Christian University, where he played at the No. 1 line in singles and doubles during his senior season. Sheehy was ranked as high as No. 77 in the
ITA singles ranking and picked up wins over the No. 29, 31, 51, 69, 87 and 113 players in the nation over the last calendar year.
"We are very excited to have Jonathan join our program here at OU," said Crowell. "His success over the last few years has been tremendous and we know that he will fit in great with our culture and definitely has that OUDNA that we are always looking for in a recruit."
Sheehy, who hails from Arlington, Texas, won both the singles and doubles titles at the 2019 Oracle ITA Summer Championships. By virtue of his wins there, Sheehy earned an automatic bid for the 2019 ITA All-American main draw.
He finished his career at Abilene Christian with a 63-36 mark in singles, good for third all-time, and 49-36 in doubles for sixth in program history.
At ACU, Sheehy was a three-time All-Southland Conference selection, five-time conference player of the week and the 2017 Southland Conference Freshman of the Year. Additionally, he was a four-time Southland All-Academic team honoree and three-time Commissioner's Honor Roll member.
Sheehy is no stranger to Norman, as the Sooners and Wildcats have met at the Headington Family Tennis Center in each of the last four seasons.
Sheehy will come to Norman in the fall as part of
OU's No. 13-ranked recruiting class, which includes Nathan Han and Welsh Hotard, who have been rated as high as No. 2 and 4, respectively, by tennisrecruiting.net.
