Sooners Sweep UIW at Home

NORMAN – The Oklahoma men's tennis team topped the University of the Incarnate Word in sweeping fashion Friday night, downing the Cardinals 7-0 at home. The win was good for OU's fourth sweep of the season.

With the win, OU improves to 7-3 overall while UIW moves to 2-4.

"It's always nice to get two guys off the court really quickly. Mason (Beiler) and (Jochen Bertsch) played great tonight, not dropping any games," said head coach Nick Crowell. "They put in two really good work weeks. I think that it was good for all of our guys to get wins tonight. Incarnate Word is a good team and it was good to get those guys in here and to get the match on a Friday night."

In doubles, Beiler and Justin Schlageter were the first to finish for the Sooners, with a 6-1 win over Omar El Kadi and Dennis Boisseau on the second court.

Max Stewart and Alex Martinez clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 defeat of Marco Galic and Luka Stojanovic on the premier court. When play was halted, Bertsch and Matt Rodriguez led Oliver Valentinsson and Marwin Kralemann 5-4 at the No. 3 line.

The momentum carried into singles action. Bertsch was the first Sooner off the court when he swept Stojanovic 6-0, 6-0 at the five spot. ITA No. 100 Beiler shut out El Kadi 6-0, 6-0 on the second court.

Stewart defeated Galic 6-2, 6-2 on court six to clinch the match. Play continued as Martinez took out Kralemann 6-3, 6-4 on court four.

Jake Van Emburgh and Schlageter finished within seconds of each other to complete the sweep. No. 107 Van Emburgh beat Boisseau 6-3, 6-3 at the top spot and Schlageter defeated Valentinsson 6-2, 7-5 on court three.
