NORMAN – For the third consecutive year, the Oklahoma women's tennis team will begin dual play this Saturday at the ITA Kickoff Weekend with the Sooners headed to Raleigh, N.C.
OU will face No. 21 Florida on Saturday at 10 a.m. CT in the first round while host and No. 8 NC State and Rice will square off on the other side of the bracket.
The winners of those matches will play each other Jan. 26 at 1 p.m. with the chance to play at the ITA National Women's Team Indoor Championships (held Feb. 7) in Champaign, Ill. on the line. The losing teams will play a consolation match at 9 a.m. CT.
Last Time Out
Sooners finished in second place at the Miami Invite to open the fall season. Oklahoma collected a total of 18 wins over the span of three days.
Highlights of the tournament included newcomer
Carmen Corley's upset No. 69 Selma Cadar (Miami), 6-2, 6-2. In doubles, No. 27
Jasmine Asghar and
Oleksandra Korashvili held on for a 7-5 win over No. 12 Georgia Drummy and Christina Rosca of Vanderbilt.
Scouting No. 21 Florida
No. 21 Florida enters the ITA Kickoff Weekend after returning from the Pink Flamingo Cup at Baha Mar Resort over the past weekend.
The Gators have three ranked player in No. 37 McCartney Kessler, No. 88 Layne Sleeth, and No. 96 Victoria Emma. Florida's doubles team, Layne Sleeth and Marlee Zein are ranked at 32.
Previewing No. 8 NC State
No. 8 NC State enters this weekend with a 6-0 overall record as they open Kickoff Weekend with Rice.
NC State defeated Appalachian State 6-1 and East Carolina 7-0 at home on Jan. 20.
The Wolfpack will be accompanied by their two ranked players, No. 18 Anna Rogers and No. 23 Adriana Reami.
Scouting Rice
With a 1-0 overall record, the Owls are scheduled to play NC State on Jan. 25 at the ITA Kickoff Weekend. The Owls are coming off a 7-0 win at home over Lamar University on Jan. 20.
Rice returns seven players from last season, including No. 86 Anastasia Smirnova, while introducing one new member to the team.
Match Info
The Sooners will face Florida in the first round at 10 a.m. CT while Rice and host NC State square off on the other side of the bracket. The winners of those two matches will play each other Sunday with a trip to the ITA National Indoor Championships on the line.
