Sooners Runners Up in Miami

MIAMI – The Oklahoma women's tennis team tied for second place at the Miami Invite to open the fall season.

Each team at the tournament was awarded a point for each singles and doubles victory tallied by its players at the tournament. Host Miami won the tournament with 15 points while OU tied Vanderbilt for second with 11. Northwestern was fourth with five points.

 On day one of the tournament, the Sooners picked up three singles wins and three doubles victories. Newcomer Carmen Corley upset No. 69 Selma Cadar (Miami), 6-2, 6-2. Marcelina Podlinska took out the Canes' Nada Dimovska 5-7, 6-3, 6-4, while Ivana Corley got a 6-3, 6-3 win over Amanda Meyer (Vanderbilt).

In doubles, No. 27 Jasmine Asghar and Oleksandra Korashvili held on for a 7-5 win over No. 12 Georgia Drummy and Christina Rosca of Vanderbilt. Carmen Corley and Ivana Corley teamed up for a 6-2 rout of Anna Ross and Emma Kurtz (Vanderbilt) while Martina Capurro and Camila Romero powered past Vandy's Marcella Cruz and Meyer, 6-2.
Podlinska and Ivana Corley added two more singles and two more doubles wins on day two. Podlinska defeated Vanderbilt's Cruz 6-1, 6-3, and Corley held on for a three-set victory over Caroline Pozo (Northwestern), 6-0, 4-6, 7-5.

Asghar and Korashvili grabbed a win over Northwestern's Julie Byrne and Hannah McColgan, 6-4, while the Corley sisters topped Christina Hand and Clarissa Hand (Northwestern) 6-4.

The Sooners closed out the tournament on a high note, adding six singles victories and two doubles wins. Podlinska finished her run undefeated with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Inci Ogut (Northwestern). No. 87 Capuro topped Byrne (Northwestern) 7-6 (3), 6-4; Carmen Corley held on to defeat the Wildcats' Clarissa Hand 6-3, 5-7, 6-0; Korashvili routed Vanessa Streng of Northwestern 6-3, 6-3; and Jasmine Asghar topped Wildcat McColgan 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 [6].
 
Asghar and Korashvili finished off the tournament with a 6-3 win over Miami's Daevenia Achong and Mayan Tahan, while Capurro and Romero tallied a win over Yuna Ito and Florencia Urrutia (Miami) 6-4.
 
OU begins dual play Saturday at ITA Kickoff Weekend. The Sooners will face Florida in the first round at 10 a.m. CT while Rice and host NC State square off on the other side of the bracket. The winners of those two matches will play each other Sunday with a trip to the ITA National Indoor Championships on the line.
