Sooners Play to Scoreless Draw in Lincoln

September 13, 2019 | Soccer

LINCOLN, Neb. The Oklahoma soccer team played to a 0-0 draw in double overtime against former Big 12 foe Nebraska on Friday night. The contest was played inside Barbara Hibner Soccer Stadium in front of a crowd of 1,323.

The Sooners (4-1-2) outshot the Huskers (1-3-2) by a mark of  13-8, with OU holding a 5-4 advantage in shots on goal.

Sophomore goalkeeper Megan McClay picked up her second shutout of the season and improved to 3-0-1 in goal. Though officially McClay only picked up four saves on the night, the sophomore made some incredible defensive plays to keep the Huskers off the board.

In the 52nd minute, it seemed as though the Sooners found the back of the net to take the lead. However, the offside flag was raised negating the goal and resetting the scoreboard to 0-0.

The Sooners were aggressive offensively in the final minutes of regulation, recording three shots in the final 10 minutes as they looked to end the game and avoid overtime.

With thirty seconds left in the second overtime period, senior Kaylee Dao slotted a perfect ball to fellow senior Ivanna Rivas. Rivas had a great look on goal, but Nebraska keeper Aubrei Corder made the final save of the night.

This season, the Sooners have played four overtime contests, three of which have gone two extra periods. In those overtime games, OU has posted a 2-0-2 record.

"Our ability to play through overtime is credit to the depth of the squad coupled with the work in the offseason under the guidance of our support staff," head coach Matt Potter said. "The team has bought in, and the attention to detail sets the players up to endure and compete in these environments. We will regroup and look to Sunday, preparing for Creighton who have had the luxury to prepare for a single game at home this week. A challenge we look forward to."

Seven different Sooners got off shots in the match, led by Dao with four. Junior Yuuka Kurosaki and freshman Sydney Sheehan each recorded two shots apiece. Freshmen Caroline Berutti and Maya McCutcheon, sophomore Jazzy Richards and junior Erika Yost each notched one shot apiece.

The Sooners will play their final non-conference road match at Creighton on Sunday. The two teams are set to play at 1 p.m. CT.
